Our approach is therefore focused on the invention and development of a new form of urbanism and innovative ways to build like nature and with nature.

We do not need to rebuild cities.

With a massive growth of cities worldwide underway, we are not looking to change existing infrastructure yet. We focus on beginning a new era of urban design with a new planning strategy that will allow us to rethink cities and stop urban sprawl as we know it. The goal: designing low and high-density neighborhoods more efficiently by reducing road infrastructure and increasing community public spaces. Together we can turn our future neighborhoods into thriving communities.

“My Name Is Nature And This Is My Keynote To Humanity” a visual poem written by Mendel Jacobson, narrated by Elena Brower, and produced by Cassandra Villanueva. Underneath the logic, the motivation, and the mission of Supernature Labs lies the soul and purpose of why we are being called towards ecological harmony. There is a force, much greater than you and I, that is constantly working to unite us all- call it whatever you will, but the fervor is undeniable. Thank you to all those who had a hand in developing this short film, and to those watching we hope it sparks something new but also familiar within you that echoes throughout space and time and reminds you that you are home.

Design Imperative No. 1
Design Neighborhoods As Cells

How might we encourage, nurture, and incorporate all life?

Plan urban neighborhoods using an organic, cellular grid, rather than an orthogonal grid, to provide more space for nature and better integrate nature into urban life.

Integrate nature as the organizational focal point to preserve, enhance, and activate the existing ecosystem as a place for all life to co-inhabit.

Plan in collaboration with nature: consider local ecology, topography, and climate as primary organizational drivers.

Increase and activate interior space for community and environmental programming, ranging from public to private, at various scales.

The Supernature BioPlanning Design Imperatives are intended to supplement the Supernature Principles and add another level of actionable specificity in pursuit of our goal to design for ♾

While the Principles (Oneness, Grounding, Flowing, Belonging, & Flourishing) represent our core values and an ethical framework that underpins our efforts, the Imperatives seek to provide clear design guidelines that focus on a new way of planning, designing, and building urban spaces with nature and like nature.

The BioPlanning Design Imperatives are a work in progress and we expect them to evolve over time through new learnings and input from
the global community of urban stakeholders. They are not intended to be considered as dogma, but rather as recommendations for designing for within the larger context of sustainable urbanism.

BioPlanning asks the fundamental question: What if nature could help us build better cities?

The BioPlanning framework is currently organized into 16 Design Imperatives, which intend to provide clear design guidelines that focus on a new way of planning, designing, and building urban spaces like nature and with nature, for the benefit of all life.

The Design Imperatives provide a holistic scaffolding upon which to design new communities and cities, including recommendations for building aggregation, nature-based infrastructure systems, efficient mobility, biophilic circulation, circular resource loops, modular construction, local ecosystem management, material reuse, bio construction strategies, urban agriculture, and community equity and wellbeing.

Stay tuned for a deep dive into each imperative and the impact they might have on the future of our cities 🌃
