Most people picture a well-protected building as one that's sealed up tight. The reality is a little different. A building envelope behaves a lot like skin: it keeps most water out, but it also needs to absorb and release moisture to stay healthy.
That's why "waterproof" doesn't mean zero water gets through, and why a little absorbed moisture usually isn't a failure at all. The trouble starts when moisture gets trapped with nowhere to go.
