Rene Gonzalez Architects, Inc. Rene Gonzalez Architects, Inc. The work intentionally blurs traditional lines and creates an active “design conversation” with a site’s ambient elements.

Founded in 1997 in Miami, Florida, Rene Gonzalez Architect (RGA) believes that a building is inexorably linked to the cultural and natural environment beyond its physical footprint. Detail-oriented and contemporary, the award-winning firm specializes in the design of museum and gallery spaces, hospitality, commercial, retail and residential projects. RGA strives to shift perceptions of design and

open up a dialogue with the spaces we occupy. This strategy has won RGA a number of prestigious awards, including the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Miami’s 2012 H. Samuel Kruse Silver Medal for Design. In 2011, RGA was selected as Firm of the Year. This is the highest honor the Chapter bestows on an architecture firm and recognizes an office that has consistently produced distinguished architecture for at least 10 years. RGA has also won two National American Institute of Architecture Design Awards, one in 2011 for Alchemist and the other in 2006 for Karla. Gonzalez is the first Miami architect in 50 years to be honored twice for Miami projects – suggesting that he is having a profound impact on the quality of the built environment of his hometown. Gonzalez has received a total of twelve Miami AIA Awards as well as additional honors including the University of Florida School of Architecture’s 2010 Alumni Design Excellence Award, Interior Design magazine’s 2013 Best of the Year Award in the category of retail design, Metropolitan Home magazine’s Home of the Year Award for design excellence and inclusion in House & Garden’s “50 International Designers that Represent the Future of Design” list. Additionally, the Smithsonian Institute nominated Gonzalez for the Hispanic Design Archive at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York. RGA’s work has been published in more than 200 national and international publications.

On the cusp of Mexican Art Week, Rene Gonzalez Architects is proud to announce our collaboration with artist Darío Escobar .escobar for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The project reflects a shared belief that this intervention can act simultaneously as a cultural marker and a living public forum, one that honors the past while anticipating future moments of national pride for Mexican fútbol. At the center of the project is Escobar’s monumental “NIDO” sculpture, made from repurposed goal posts sourced from public parks throughout Mexico. The idea is that by repurposing the old goal posts, new goal posts and fresh fútbol fields are provided for young aspiring players in communities across the country. Surrounding the sculpture, a public plaza designed by RGA supports NIDO as a flexible, inclusive, experiential landscape. Designed to accommodate celebration, gathering, reflection, and game-day fans, the space supports moments of collective joy as well as quieter acts of pause and contemplation.

Together, the sculptural monument and the plaza operate as a sundial, a callback to the Aztec Calendar Stone, using the movement of the sun and the casting of shadows to mark pivotal moments in Mexican fútbol history. These temporal alignments transform the sculpture into a spatial archive, where time, sport, and ritual intersect, and where past victories and future aspirations are inscribed into the daily life of the site.

Anchoring the composition, a volcanic stone base forms a protective threshold around the sculpture. Rough and tactile in character, it discourages climbing and physical damage while remaining visually open to the monument. This grounded material contrasts with the lightness of the structure above, reinforcing the project’s balance between monumentality and human scale.

Simultaneously iconic and accessible, the sculpture and plaza are deeply rooted in the collective memory of Mexican fútbol.

Located within the Miami Beach Historic district, this project preserves the character of the original Art Deco Dexter Building built in 1936. Its dynamic streamline details are conserved, and its distinctive keyhole entry is recast as portals into a new understory garden for a residence. The new home lightly hovers above the historic façade and entry garden with a reflective underbelly that mirrors and dissolves into the landscape. The portion of the new home that cantilevers over the historic facade is made entirely of glass block, a material that was used in smaller doses in the Miami Art Deco District and internationally in the Art Moderne movement in projects like Maison De Verre by Pierre Chareau. 🙏🏼 - Landscape Design/ .llc - Structural Design/ .lara.barcelos - Renderings.

Miami Sea and Sky

In an exciting collaboration with , we developed a series of degrades inspired by the colors of Miami’s surreal sea and sky. These delicious palettes have been implemented into a series of projects: The Alchemist Store, Prairie House, and Fisher Island Penthouse.

At The Alchemist Store, , the central feature, “Ethereal Glow,” is a saturated mirrored installation that is in stark contrast to the store’s minimalist design.

The Prairie House showcases “Transient Storm,” a dark gray ombré for a custom dining table, allowing it to dissolve seamlessly into the surrounding space.
It is in the sunrises, sunsets, stormy nights and bright blue days that Miami performs like no other city in the world.

The Coconut Grove project exemplifies the immense power of design to be transformative.

RGA’s approach was to propose a series of “art interventions” that would create joyful moments throughout the house. The most striking transformation is in the living room which has been re-imagined via a unique collaboration between RGA and lighting designer Johanna Grawunder entitled: “The Spiral Gold Circuit.” The bronze light fixture, rose gold mirrors, and Rosso Levanto marble in honed and acid etched finishes thread through the living room visually connecting the fireplace and the stair alcove.

Our La Vida Diaria y El Tiempo: Clara Porset, Rene Gonzalez and Marco Castillo exhibition is on view one more week until June 8th in the former home of iconic industrial designer Clara Porset, Edificio para Artistas, designed by Luis Barragán & Max Cetto.

While living in Clara Porset’s actual apartment in Mexico City Rene Gonzalez has engaged in a six-week experiential series Clarita Querida Estas in Casa: Rene Gonzalez visita a Clara Porset comprised of 4 Actos: La Exibición, La Charla, La Cena and El Baile. Each Acto explores the themes of creating identity in exile and the various facets of Latino culture that are championed in her work and those that are most meaningful to Rene along his own journey to reconnect with his heritage.

Acto Uno – La Exibición highlights include the Hammock Chair, designed by Rene Gonzalez Architects for Paola Lenti in visual conversation with Clara Porset’s iconic Butaque chair. Yab Yum de pared (7 elementos), 2024, is a new work Marco Castillo created for the exhibition that pays homage to the not-so-well-known 70’s seating design by Cuban architect Heriberto Duverger. The show includes a curated photographic selection of RGA’s architectural work which is coupled with texts by Porset on themes of materiality, tropicality and environmental sustainability at different moments in time.

Porset, Gonzalez and Castillo were all born in Cuba and have made their international mark in the fields of industrial design, architecture and art focusing their attention on functionalism, democracy in design and the celebration of everyday life. Rene Gonzalez Architects is proud to play a part in the design legacy of this extraordinary building and invites you to visit before the exhibition closes on June 8th. Big big thank you to .___a for a beautiful experience !!!

In the most remote part of the showroom garden, in the shade of trees that have grown spontaneously over decades, the Hammock lounge chairs create a laid back and informal atmosphere.
