Brillhart Architecture

Brillhart Architecture Architecture As a design-intensive office, we share a love for and facility with making things. As a result, much of our work is inspired by water.

In the natural course of development, form, tectonics and materiality have become of primary interest to us. While all of our projects are highly site-specific, tectonic potential and ideas of craftsmanship are the common threads that link each together – whether we are working on architecture, installations, exhibitions, interiors, furniture, or other speculative research projects. We also assume

a “roll-up-your sleeves” approach that extends beyond design. Engaged in low-budget competitions, installations, and personal endeavors (such as our house) early on, we grew our firm by conceiving, designing, fabricating, assembling and constructing many things ourselves. In simply having to figure things out, we have become highly resourceful: regularly collaborating with outside disciplines; learning to maximize structural and material efficiencies; and seeking creative solutions to details that may be outside the industry defaults. Our goal is to create a dynamic and contemporary building vocabulary that is not debated in terms of style – but rather responds to ever-changing cultures, site conditions, economic, ecological, and construction environments. With that said, we have also developed a strong connection to the tropics, and more specifically to the aquatic landscape, working in Miami. The City is a water-based metropolis, sandwiched between the Everglades and Biscayne Bay, sliced by the Miami River, resting above a shallow aquifer and drenched during rainy summer months.

Record Houses 2025
Morningside Residence

We are thrilled that Morningside Residence, located in Miami’s Morningside Historic District, has been named a 2025 Record House by Architectural Record Special thanks to our clients and partners who were so invested in making this project a reality and congratulations to all of this year’s winners!

“Cruising up Biscayne Boulevard, one could easily mistake Miami for a city predominated by glass-clad, often wavy, concrete high-rises. In contrast, Morningside is a verdant historic enclave just a mile north of the city’s Design District, tucked between the boulevard and Biscayne Bay. The neighborhood was largely developed during Florida’s first land boom a century ago and comprises a motley crew of houses. Many are breezy Mission or Mediterranean Revival structures that, like other residential tracts across Miami, embody the contradictory pursuits of maximizing exposure to the enviable tropical environment while ensuring comfort during hotter months, when the sun’s harsh glare and an oppressive humidity descend upon the city.

The Morningside Residence is a recent addition to the area. Designed by Brillhart Architecture ()—a Miami-based practice, with an office in Savannah, led by Jacob and Melissa Brillhart—the house ably balances the climatic demands with a contemporary approach deeply influenced by Sarasota Modern design principles.”

Huge thank you to for filming a few of our projects in Miami and the Bahamas this past week. A gigantic effort and much was learned from Juan in terms of composition, sequence and light. Also thanks to our clients for opening up their houses once again and to Mark Ingraham for his tour of Biscayne Bay and ongoing enthusiasm all things architectural.
