Cape Homes are one of our mainstays...so many we have designed and built over the years. Did you ever live in a Cape home with bedrooms tucked under the eaves, the perfection of the symmetry, the massive chimney waiting for Santa on Christmas Day? The simplicity of these homes define survival and coziness against the elements of our adventurous ancestors defining the American landscape...and still do. But now...our new "Old" Capes come with a bit more comfort. We love Capes!

A BUILDER’S
CHRISTMAS WISH
by Mike Connor

I’m always reminded at this time of year about why our homes hold such a special place in the hearts and minds of our many customers who continue to send us photos of their homes decked out in holiday celebration. Being in the business of architectural history puts us squarely in the light and spirit of tradition and all that means as thoughts turn to family and loved ones and the places and things that define life from a sentimental perspective.

I was thinking recently that having been so fortunate to have built so many homes for fifty years that so many of those “new” homes have themselves become a part of rich family traditions, so much so that they can now be a part of the silent contemplation embodied in the time-honored expression “If these walls could talk”!

In my early building years I never thought about building homes that would someday speak silently of family history through the scars on a handrail or the nail holes under the mantle that held children’s Christmas stockings year after year, children who now live grown-up lives far removed from the quiet memories of their childhood homes. I know from talking to so many clients for so many years about the new home we were about to build with each of them that they wanted something that expressed tradition and enduring character. And maybe none of us thought of it at the time, but tradition and character live on in memories created in special places, and for a child no place is as special as the home they grew up in.

And so, my Christmas thought this year is how grateful I am for having played my small part in creating special places that are now part of the embedded memories in so many families’ histories, and my Christmas wish to all is that I hope those memories bring a warmth and joy that I know was the unstated intent of so many of our wonderful clients who let us play our quiet part in the silent but enduring thought “if these walls could talk”!

The goosebumps here are growing as we can anticipate the patter of children's feet down the stairwells of our homes. All to see what Santa left under the tree.

Do you love stairs as much as we do?
