Fall migration is underway!

Fall is a wonderful time to get to know some of the special birds passing through our area—including the tiny but mighty Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

These little travelers are among the first to head south. Adult males begin their journey in late July and August, followed by females and juveniles through September.

Unlike many migrating birds, hummingbirds travel solo and during the day, often flying at tree-top height or lower so they can easily spot food along the way.

And they have an incredible way of preparing for the journey! Migrating hummingbirds can gain 25%–40% of their body weight in fat to fuel their travels. Some may even make a non-stop flight across the Gulf of Mexico.

So, if you spot a Ruby-throated Hummingbird in your yard this fall, take a moment to watch—it may be on its way to its next great adventure!
