DOES STAINING A FENCE ACTUALLY SAVE YOU MONEY?

Does staining a fence save you money? We get this question a lot in our service business. I want to share some real data with you that demonstrates how staining and sealing your fence or deck can save you a ton of money. If you have read some of our other articles like this one about how penetrating oil stains work, then you already know that we can substantially increase the life of your fence or deck by applying stains on a regular basis. I wanted to know how much money you can actually save by staining, so I reached out to my good friend, YouTube personality and third generation fence company owner, Joe Everest, to find out what a new fence might cost. Joe and I did some research on the cost to remove 200’ of old fence and replace it with 200’ of new cedar privacy fence with two gates. The average cost right now in quarter two of 2023 is $12,920. The average fence will last you seven years if left unprotected according to our research. The cost of ownership is $1,845.72 per year, if you don’t stain. We can extend the life of that same fence out to 15 plus years simply by using a penetrating oil based stain and sealer on regular intervals. An average cost to stain and seal that 200’ of fence is about $1,680 if you have it professionally done by a contractor who specializes in professional wood care. If you properly re-stain the fence every four years, the total lifetime cost of staining is $6,720 over the life of the fence; the yearly cost of ownership goes way down to only $448 per year if you stain.

So the answer is “yes,” staining and sealing your fence with a premium oil based stain will absolutely save you money - approximately $1,232 per year.
