Still time to protect those palms that are in the ground.
A couple methods I use. 1st for my front yard palm that is cold hardy. I only protect it now in extremes (like what’s forecasted)
Root Protection (Ground & Potted)
* Mulch Heavily: Apply 3-4 inches of organic mulch (bark, leaves) around the base to insulate roots from deep freezing. * Water Deeply: Saturate the soil before a freeze to help retain warmth, but avoid waterlogging.
Trunk & Crown Protection (For Freezing Temps)
* Tie Fronds: Gather and tie fronds into a tight bundle to protect the vulnerable spear (growing point). * Wrap Trunk: Use burlap, landscape fabric, or blankets, securing with tape or ties from the ground up to the fronds. * Add Heat (Optional but Recommended): Wrap the trunk with old-fashioned incandescent (not LED) Christmas lights and use a thermo-cube to turn them on below 35°F for gentle warmth. FOR LESS HARDY (like my backyard 🌴)
**all the above plus:
* Create a Frame: Use stakes to build a frame, then drape plastic or frost cloth over it, ensuring it doesn't touch the foliage to prevent condensation/fungus. AFTER THE FREEZE
* Remove Covers Promptly: Take off coverings as soon as the freeze passes.
* Apply Fungicide: Spray the crown with copper fungicide to prevent rot from cold-to-warm transitionsZE
