Beautiful. Lighting bugs in a lighting storm. Wonderful way to spend the night in our home. We are officially moved out of the apartment and living in our very own hand made house.

Yesterday's high was a sunny 15°, and today only reached 20°. All of the sunshine the last two days has the house up to over 60° in the day, without insulation or any more then plastic over the doors. All the warmth inspired me to put up some interior walls. I started with the master bathroom. From there I worked toward the egress window and created the doorway between the inner and outer greenhouses. All of these walls are 7 ft tall, the rest of the height will be framed for more polycarbonate. Most of these walls will be polycarbonate. After a quick run to the hardware store I framed the door to the east bedroom, the wall up to the egress window, and the doorway between the inner and outer greenhouses. It always feels good to see this much go up in one day.

Today I finally got a chance to work on the ridge cap. The windows where the biggest challange for the winter, and the ridge cap will be the second. I started with a ladder that hangs from the top. This homemade solution did well to get me close to the top. It was hard to move as I secured the ridge. Once the left bracket broke I had to find a new way. Simply setting a ladder at the transition is not an option on a nice warm day, and it is icy everywhere. I screwed down a shelf to hold the ladder while I climbed. This way is stronger and much easier to move. It is shorter and has potential to pull away from the wall. A fair trade as far as I am concerned.

One straight board became two twisted parts with one clean cut. This is a 2x4 that I cut in two. Before the cut was finished the two halves sprang apart. Wood can be so unpredictable.

I hope the weather holds out for the morning. Building these windows takes some time, but I am happy to do every step.
I start with 2x4s cut in half the long way. This is because I need almost 200 straight 2x2s for the frames. If you have spent time in the lumber yard you know that small lumber is often twisted. Once on site I begin by measuring and cutting the lumber for each window frame. Then it is nailed together as square as possible. To help give a cleaner look I measure and drill the holes to countersink all of the screws. The polycarbonate must be cut for each window and specially attached to prevent cracks. I place positioning pegs along the top and gently clamp them together for the lift. A bead of silicone is applied around the exterior frame that is already attached. Then it is up the ladder with the frame and polycarbonate. Once in position I remove the clamps and brace the window while drilling pilot holes in the polycarbonate. This is done in place assure the oversized holes are perfectly positioned and leave room for seasonal expansion. After all the windows are in, and weather permitting, we will wrap everything in metal for longevity in the harsh weather. Check out the time lapse video in the next post.

I have been working hard to prepare for winter. The shorter days require work lights. The cold temperatures encurage me to hook up the fireplace. After almost a month of anticipation, the polycarbonate for the windows has arrived. Watch for a post all about that process. For now enjoy some late night photos from the last few nights.
