Intern Spotlight: Evan, Spring 2026 ✨

With his internship coming to an end, we wanted to take a moment to highlight one of our hardest working interns: Evan! During his time with us, he collected and cleaned THOUSANDS of seeds, installed various native gardens both on and off site, and, most importantly, made us smile along the way. 💚

Pictured here with his very own native garden on the nursery property, designed and installed completely by Evan, we can confidently say that he is walking away with invaluable knowledge on the importance of native plants in our environment and how to implement them. 🌎

Thank you to the UToledo College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics for providing us with so many wonderful interns over the years, with many more to come in the future! 🌱

New at Liv's Native Nursery! 🌿

We’ve just added some shrubs and trees to our available stock—come check them out this weekend!

🌰 Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) – A small to medium-sized native tree known for its striking spring flower clusters and distinctive buckeye nuts. It provides valuable early-season nectar for pollinators and makes an excellent addition to naturalized landscapes and woodland edges.

🌿 Common Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) – A hardy native shrub prized for its attractive peeling bark, clusters of white flowers, and adaptability to a wide range of growing conditions. Its blooms support pollinators, while its dense branching provides shelter for birds and other wildlife.

💙 False Indigo (Baptisia australis) – A long-lived native perennial featuring beautiful spikes of deep blue-purple flowers in late spring. Its deep root system makes it highly drought tolerant once established, and it serves as a host plant for several butterfly and moth species.

🌸 P***y Willow (Salix discolor) – One of the first native shrubs to signal spring, producing its soft, silvery catkins before the leaves emerge. An important early-season food source for native bees and other pollinators, it thrives in moist soils and adds seasonal interest to the landscape.

📍 Find us this weekend at the Native Plant Expo & Marketplace at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds on Saturday from 9am-1pm

Native Plant of the Week: Ohio Goldenrod (Solidago ohioensis) 🌿

Ohio goldenrod is a bright and reliable native that brings a burst of golden-yellow blooms in late summer and early fall. This species forms strong upright clumps topped with dense flower clusters that are absolutely buzzing with pollinator activity when in bloom. It’s a true seasonal highlight in any native planting!

💛 Why we love it:
• Pollinator powerhouse: One of the best late-season nectar sources for bees and butterflies.
• Long bloom time: Provides color when many other plants are starting to fade.
• Low maintenance: Hardy, dependable, and easy to grow once established.

🌱 Planting tips:
• Prefers full sun.
• Thrives in moist to average soils but adapts well once established.
• Excellent for meadows, prairie plantings, and naturalized areas.

🌸 We have Ohio goldenrod available now! Stop by and see us at 19835 Welch Road, Milan, MI 48160. We’re open Fridays–Sundays, 10 am to 4 pm—come pick up some late-season color and support your local pollinators!

Join us this Sunday, May 31st, at Risdon Park in Saline for the unveiling of a beautiful pollinator garden installed last year! 🌼

Invasive Plant Alert: Dame's Rocket (Hesperis matronalis) 🪻

Dame's Rocket (Hesperis matronalis) is blooming right now across woodlands, roadsides, and even your own yard. While the bright purple flowers may look pretty, this plant is a serious threat to our ecosystems. It spreads aggressively, with a single plant producing up to 20,000 seeds, crowding out native plants and disrupting wildlife habitats.

🌿 Don’t confuse it with these native look-alikes: Marsh Phlox (Phlox glaberrima), Prairie Phlox (Phlox pilosa), and a variety of other phloxes native to Michigan.

How can you tell the difference? Easy, just remember this rhyme: “Petals of five, let it thrive. Petals of four, go to war.”

👉 If you spot Dame's Rocket, please report it to local conservation authorities and, if possible, remove the whole plant (roots included).

By acting now while it’s blooming, we can help protect our native landscapes! 🌎 💚
