You taught me new ways to hurt.
Took my dream come true
and made me a fool.
There’s no going back to what was.
Deceit this deep sticks to your psyche.
Drapes a gray veil over a world once bursting with color and love.
All I see is a version of you who believed destroying me was justified.
All I hear are well-spun lies
you thought I deserved to sleep beside.
It’s jarring how careless someone can be with another's heart.
The way the same arms holding you
will break you.
Then apologize for the pain they may have caused. I don’t need your remorse.
I needed your loyalty.
I needed your promises kept.
I needed you to hold steady.
Instead, your weakness became my strength. Your spinelessness made me courageous. Everything I surrendered freely has now returned to me. I won’t live with the burdens you earned.
I won’t blame myself, or label myself naïve.
It’s true, you taught me new ways to hurt.
But you also revealed I’m stronger than I realized. My only mistake was envisioning a future with someone I’m better off without. Whenever I cross your mind,
just know that I'm somewhere colors don't fade. Swimming in sunshine,
and not thinking of you at all.
