On the boards:

We're working with a client to renovate their beach home. First pass is always all over the place because we want to give them options to think about, even when we're as constrained by existing conditions as this house will be. We played with the stair location, the overall look of the house, whether or not there would be a roof deck, where we would put the screened porch, how to get a "front door", and a ton of other details so that they can mix and match and think and the next round be a lot closer to a final design.

Excited for this house to get built, we were working on it for a while. A multi-generational home, almost a complex. We've done a couple of these over the years, but most families aren't looking to build a home to house their mother, mother in law, future children in law, and eventual grand children all under one roof. It presents challenges to provide space for gathering, and also to get away. And while the house is large (and costly), it's more efficient than building 3-5 homes for all of the potential families and maintains those bonds. We suspect that this will become more popular as the economic and familial benefits become more important than the flexibility afforded by traditional single family homes.

Client knew what they wanted. The requested turret feature with wrap around porch wasn't easy to detail out, but it defines this home. It helps this home stand out and make it uniquely our client's. The landscaping (not us) doesn't hurt either.

Site visit to this home. So far, just the foundation installed. This will be the ground floor entry and parking/workshop area. It's masonry, partly for strength to support the several floors above, and partly to survive inundation in case of a flood. If the waters come, all the homeowner will need to do is wash the block off.

The new family room in this design provides access to views and light on the water side, and a vaulted ceiling allows light in on the opposite side and a sense of space in a relatively crowded secondary public space.

Site visit to this job the other day. Phase one is lifting the house above the flood plain. When this is done, the addition will be framed up to expand the living space and provide some usable bedrooms in this undersized home (and a roof deck with what should be a beautiful view out over the marsh.)

Accent lighting, we don't get to pick it (usually), but we do get to provide the space for it. Here, this tower feature can receive light from almost any direction the sun shines.

On the boards:

4 different attempts to renovate a beach house. This is a first pass, so the options vary quite a bit, although probably most of the variations are internal. The goal here was to lift the house up to create a storage level beneath the home, add a bedroom, a screened porch, a roof deck, and some other odds and ends. We were also trying to lock down a budget as the range of costs here vary greatly. We bet that people's favorites will be the most expensive, which is your favorite?

Working with a church who wants to build a large new home for the congregation, but doesn't want a generic metal building. In fact, One key request is that the final building be framed from light wood framing. We're early in the design process, so we'll be excited to keep you updated on how this challenge plays out.

New stairwell next to the front door. You can't get much more light as you come into the main part of the house from the ground floor. This corner was carefully detailed to work with the various roof lines that intersect around these windows. Originally, we had specified a corner window mull as well, although that did get changed in the final construction to an easier detail with a corner structural post.
