d sourwood honey.. Hooker Hollow is the long time dream of its owner, Melissa Hooker. Her great grandfather, Lerton Wright Hooker, was a master gardener and served as RVP for Region 9 (Illinois) with The American Iris Society. The Trout Lily serves as a reminder of resilience, overcoming the challenges of unpredictable spring weather to bloom. It thrives through persistence, adapting in its own distinctive way. Even after the floods of Helene ravaged the banks of the Middle Fork, these Lillies have come out in abundance.. more than previous years. Let her inspire us all, we can do hard things!

Yellow Root (Xanthorhiza) is a shrubby plant with bright yellow rhizome. Here at HHGA I find the flowers in April. It is found on stream banks and in damp wooded areas in the eastern US.
The root has been used in Folk medicine for centuries for anything from toothaches to laxative.
The flowers are dainty and absolutely perfect.

Early Spring at Ho**er Hollow is one of my favorite times. I adore exploring the property looking for new plant friends and of course checking the spots where I normally find my old favorites.

Bloodroot ( Sanguinaria canadensis ) is an early riser. She emerges in March and unfurls her beautiful foliage. Very soon after, her bright, white petals open to reveal a perfect flower. The sap of the plant is a bright orange/ red which is where the name comes from.
Blood Root is not a plant I work with much. She was used by the Native Americans for dye. She is a medicinal, her uses being mostly topical, as an antibacterial astringent and treating skin conditions. She is also being researched for curing cancer.

Happy Spring! 🌼🌸🌷🌱🐣I’ll be posting more on this page, I’m trying to find a balance between work and passion ❤️
