I used to pull these without thinking twice πŸ˜… Now I look a little closer first:
🌸 Violets are native wildflowers in many areas, not just β€œlawn weeds.”
πŸ¦‹ They support fritillary butterflies, which use violet leaves as host plants.
🌿 They do well in shady spots where grass often struggles.
πŸ’§ Once settled, they usually don’t need much attention.
βœ‚οΈ If they spread too much, I just thin them instead of wiping them out completely.
I don’t let them take over every bed, but I do think they deserve a little more credit.

These plants don’t just make your garden smell fresh - many gardeners grow them because bugs can’t stand the scent. A few pots near doors, windows, or patios can make a big difference.

Strong-smelling herbs can help make a kitchen garden less tempting to deer 🌿 A few useful ones to plant around the edges:
🌱 Rosemary, sage, oregano, and thyme
πŸ§„ Garlic and chives near borders or paths
πŸ’œ Lavender in sunny, well-drained spots
🌢️ Hot peppers where the garden gets enough warmth
I’d still use fencing if deer pressure is heavy, but these plants can help create a less inviting border.
