Delaware has teamed up with Thomas Jefferson University to create the first four-year medical school in the state's history, with the first class of 40 students expected in 2028.
What it does: Establishes the Delaware Medical School Consortium, led by Sidney Kimmel Medical College, to train physicians and grant M.D. degrees entirely within Delaware
Who it affects: Aspiring physicians, patients statewide, and communities facing doctor shortages — especially in Kent and Sussex counties
When it takes effect: First student applications open early 2027; first class begins summer 2028
Why it matters: Delaware is one of only three states without a medical school. This closes that gap and builds a homegrown pipeline of doctors committed to serving Delawareans
