"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

A week ago I observed this motionless Fall Webworm Moth on a Persimmon leaf in my garden. She had died after depositing her eggs. As caterpillars they consume the leaves of many kinds of trees. I see them in my pecan trees every year. They're a terrific source of food for many birds and contrary to popular (old fashioned/out dated) horticultural systems of belief- they do not kill healthy trees. As adults the FWM lacks mouthparts to eat, lives only about a week, reproduces and dies.
I continued to be curious about the eggs and visited them daily during my garden walkabouts.
Today, I was lucky enough to catch the enemy of the FWM- a tiny parasitic wasp laying eggs within the eggs of the Fall Webworm.
THIS is how a healthy ecological garden functions. You leave the "disease" or "pest" (old terms that don't fit in an ecological garden) and wait for the predator to balance the ecosystem. Everything must eat. All of the native things play a role. With patience and a close eye, you may even get to see it happen. 💚🌎

This little piggy will NOT go to market. 😄 It's staying home.
Black Swallowtail Butterfly host plants include native and non-native plants in the carrot family, such as dill, fennel, parsley, and carrots. Here is one on parsley.
If you harvest any of these veg from your garden, please look for eggs and cats and leave them be. They will grow up into beautiful butterflies.

I've had a request for Cat Grass (in picture) and just happened to have some seed. It's ready and I'll bring it on Saturday May 30th. Another plant also in the picture is Marshmallow, Althaea officinalis. The Latin translation is to heal or cure as it was once used in plant medicine. The entire plant- roots, leaves, and flowers- is edible. The roots and leaves are eaten like a vegetable often cooked with onions or garlic.
