Q: “Hey Eddie. We just had our asphalt driveway installed. How long do we have to wait to park our cars on it?”
A: Great question. I get this one all the time!
Usually, you’ll want to give your new driveway 3–5 days before parking on it. But here on Long Island, it really depends on the weather.
If it’s hot and sunny, that fresh blacktop stays soft longer, give it up to a week. If it’s cooler out, you can usually park a bit sooner.
Now here’s the part most folks don’t know: even though it’s safe to drive and park after a few days, your asphalt actually keeps curing for 6–12 months. That just means it’s still hardening under the surface and those oils are settling in. During that time, it’s best to:
👉 Avoid turning your wheels while parked.
👉 Keep heavy trailers or campers off it for a while.
👉 Wait until it’s fully cured before you sealcoat, usually around the one-year mark.
Take good care of it early on, and that driveway will last you for decades.
