This morning we arranged a walking tour of the Milwaukee Avenue Historic District for our team. We had the privilege of hearing from long-time resident Bruce Margolis about this history of this block, its original purpose as low cost housing, threats it's faced along the way, and the hard work and dedication it took from many passionate preservationists who came before us. So much has happened in order to have this gem still standing and restored today. Thanks also to PreserveMinneapolis for connecting us with Bruce!

Our team restores old windows in homes all across the Twin Cities, and we hear a lot of the same worries. 🪟

Most of them come from advice passed along by a contractor, a neighbor, or a replacement window ad. We understand why people believe them. But in our experience, most old windows people worry about just need some care, not a full replacement.

Part two with Mariah, a St. Paul homeowner and prominent Twin Cities realtor who believes in preserving old homes.

If you’re newer to old-house ownership, here are a few more things to add to your “stewardship” radar as you plan ahead:

→ Check your storm windows each fall. A loose or missing storm is often the real source of a draft, not the sash itself.
→ Keep an eye on exterior paint lines around windows and trim. Peeling paint lets moisture in, and moisture is what actually damages old wood, not age.
→ Walk your home’s exterior after big wind or rain events. Catching a loose piece of glazing or a cracked pane early keeps a small fix small.
→ Old houses move with the seasons. A window that sticks in July and rattles in January is normal, not a sign something’s broken.

None of this needs to happen all at once. Old windows are built to be maintained, not replaced, so there’s room to be intentional about when and how you take care of them.
