We are deeply grateful to have received recognition for our work with on the Grand Rounds Missing Link, which received an Honor Award from in the Planning & Urban Design category 🌳🏙️

The Grand Rounds is the nation’s longest continuous urban parkway system and has defined Minneapolis for 140 years, linking the city’s lakes, rivers, creeks, and civic spaces. Yet one critical segment—the “Missing Link”—remains unbuilt, leaving residents of the East Side disconnected from the parkways.

The plan for the Missing Link addresses this longstanding gap by repurposing underused roadways, restoring brownfields, and revealing buried waterways-turning the challenges of an urban environment into opportunities to improve connectivity, enhance ecology, and celebrate community identity. Online geospatial tools empowered residents and agencies to collaboratively shape the corridor, establishing a model for shaping legacy infrastructure in dense urban environments.

Through thoughtful selection criteria which prioritized projects that would align with partner agency initiatives and provide immediate community benefit, the first phase project was selected this year. The “Mid-City Prairie” is scheduled to become the first step toward completing the Grand Rounds Missing Link 🌾

Thank you to for the recognition and to for the opportunity to work on such an exciting and impactful project!

Last weekend, our team joined the Earth Day Cleanup at Lake Hiawatha and got to work along the shoreline. 🌿

Chuck showed off his impressive balance to remove a piece of trash from the water and in total, our group cleaned up 110 pounds of trash. Andrew single-handedly collected 16lbs!! We are grateful for these waterways and green spaces in our city, and the collective effort it takes to care of them. ❤️

Happy Earth Day! 🌎🌳🌊

Discover the story of the Minnesota State Capitol Mall! 🏛️

Recently, we collaborated with to complete a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) that examines the origin, evolution, and distinctive character of the Minnesota State Capitol Mall.

The original vision for the Mall, led by architect Cass Gilbert, envisioned three broad approaches cutting through the dense urban fabric of Saint Paul south of the newly constructed State Capitol building. After slow progress on Gilbert’s plan, design leadership shifted to Arthur Nichols, and a new concept emerged in conjunction with urban renewal efforts and the construction of Interstate 94. This redesign introduced a larger open lawn framed by government buildings and subdivided by a network of roadways. The realization of this plan, followed by incremental changes, shaped the Capitol Mall landscape we see today.

Like other national historic districts, the Mall has a defined period of significance (1902–1962). This extended timeframe reflects its importance both as a work of landscape architecture and as an example of federally funded urban renewal. The CLR documents how dramatically the design intent and physical condition of cultural landscapes like the Capitol Mall can evolve within this period, challenging traditional preservation frameworks. It also illustrates how the landscape has continued to change since 1962, highlighting the defining characteristics that persist today.
