As warmer days return, we’re drawn outside, watching how light moves across the landscape and how each space begins to reawaken.

Thoughtful outdoor design begins with understanding its context, including the path of the sun, the views to frame or soften, and the materials that reflect the character of the land.

Moments like an outdoor shower become an extension of that experience. They feel simple, sensory, and deeply connected to the surroundings.

Our process begins with listening. We consider how you live, what brings you joy, and how you want to gather and unwind. From there, each element is chosen with intention, creating spaces that feel both enduring and personal.

In honor of Earth Day, we’re reflecting on how thoughtful design can deepen our relationship with the land.

Set along the wooded shores of Leech Lake, our Leech Lake Retreat project replaces a cherished family cabin, reimagined to honor its history while embracing a more sustainable future. The home is carefully positioned to capture views of both the lake and a private harbor, allowing it to sit quietly within the landscape.

Inside, natural materials, handcrafted details, and a warm palette of wood and earth tones create a sense of continuity and comfort. A Passive House–inspired enclosure system, along with geothermal and radiant heating, supports energy efficiency and year-round performance.

A reminder that when architecture responds to its environment with care, it creates spaces that not only endure, but nurture both people and place.

A garage, reimagined.

Designed to shift effortlessly from storage to entertainment, this space includes a golf simulator that brings a bit of the course indoors.

With the Masters underway at Augusta National, we're reminded that design can make space for both everyday life and the moments you look forward to.

A well-designed kitchen supports more than just how a room looks, it shapes how it’s lived in.

Thoughtful storage, from tailored drawers to concealed cabinetry, brings clarity and ease to everyday routines while making moments of gathering feel effortless.

With Easter weekend here, it’s a quiet reminder that the most meaningful spaces are the ones that work beautifully behind the scenes.

This week, we’re celebrating Liam Hoy’s one-year anniversary with the A&H team.

Liam holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago and dual bachelor’s degrees in Studio Art and Environmental Studies from Lawrence University. His approach to architecture is rooted in thoughtful problem-solving and a desire to create meaningful, lasting impact through design.

Over the past year, Liam has contributed across multiple phases of our work, most notably on an upcoming cabin project, where he has been involved from early schematic sketching through 3D modeling and into design development.

The project explores a unique goal: creating an interior space that feels like an exterior porch. Through careful material selection and fenestration, the design brings the character and openness of a screened porch into the lower level, blurring the line between inside and out.

Inspired by time spent outdoors, Liam brings a sensitivity to place and a collaborative spirit to his work. He finds the greatest fulfillment in building strong client relationships and helping translate ideas into spaces that are truly lived in.

Liam, thank you for the curiosity, care, and energy you’ve brought to A&H this past year. We’re grateful to have you on the team and look forward to all that’s ahead.
