Last weekend's grand opening event for Staples Mill Firehouse 20 was a huge success. Some of BKV Group members had the pleasure to be amongst many of Henrico County Government personnel, state/local officials, and the residents to celebrate their newest firehouse! Thank you to Henrico County Government, Henrico County Division of Fire and Ritchie Curbow Construction on their commitment to partnering with this project. Since 2015, BKV Group has enjoyed a strong partnership with Henrico County General Services and the Division of Fire. During this time, BKV Group has developed the prototype for the “next generation” firehouse facility. Firehouse 20 was designed to blend with materials matching the surrounding context. This project is designed to achieve LEEED Our relationship with Henrico County is evidence of our commitment to partnering and serving our clients with excellence!

Henrico County Government and Henrico County Division of Fire invite the community to a Grand Opening event at Fire Station 20 on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 11 AM - 2 PM at 8521 Willis Road (just off Staples Mill Road near the intersection of Parham Road). The celebration will include a ribbon cutting, station tours, and activities for children!

In a recent study of 200 global cities, 90% were found to be unaffordable for living, with the average home costing more than three times the average income with shortages of land, lending, labor, and materials fueling the crisis (according to the World Economic Forum). With over 35 years designing affordable and adaptive reuse housing projects nationally, Senior Design Leader and Managing Partner, Michael Krych was interviewed for Realtor Magazine’s feature article, “Critical Need: The State of Affordable Housing,” addressing “how the pandemic and inflation intensified the challenge [and] widened the gap between those who can and can’t afford housing.” In the piece, Mike outlines solutions as well, noting how BKV Group’s design strategies “keep costs down by selecting cost-effective materials and repeating floorplans where possible,” plus keeping “existing infrastructure exposed where applicable” to allow for BKV-designed buildings to be leased at full capacity before opening, and adaptation helping neighborhood venues enjoy a resurgence. Bowline is a two-phase, Planned Unit Development (PUD) featuring market-rate apartment style units, community amenity space, street level walk-up units, and ample parking space within a highly landscaped, park-like setting overlooking the Mississippi River. The community celebrates the historical significance of the site, with Bowline drawing inspiration from a strong connection to the immediate site and region as well as drawing from the history and historical uses of the past. BKV Senior Design Leader and Partner, Trace Jacques, moderated an afternoon AIA Minnesota session titled, "Designing for Diversity, Identity, and Accessibility: Pilot Opportunity Site Engagement." Centered on architects and designers using sustainable design tools for their projects, including performance analysis and energy modeling tools, Trace facilitated the dialogue where panelists presented case study projects, and identified software tools used in each phase of the design, plus how they benefited the project’s sustainability goals. Located on the landmark Fort Snelling site, Upper Post Flats is a story of revolving history with BKV Group and our developer partner, Dominium, recreating it for affordable, workforce housing with priority given to veterans and their families. The Upper Post Flats site has been vacant for years, with some of the buildings being empty since the 1970s. In many ways, the project is a typical historic rehabilitation project, but due to the historic significance of the site, the buildings are being recreated as closely as possible to their original forms yet repurposed for modern-day living. When fully open by the end of 2023, Upper Post Flats will have units ranging from studios to five-bedroom apartments, plus an array of amenities including a clubroom, childcare, leasing offices, a pool and outdoor deck, roads, sidewalks, and small garages. AIA Minnesota’s weekly newsletter, ENTER, published an in-depth profile on A-Mill Artist Lofts which was recently honored with the chapter’s 2022 Affordable Housing Design Award.
