I stopped chasing the perfect garden twenty years ago, and I sleep much better for it. Mostly, plants just want us to get out of their way. But every March, without fail, I watch well-meaning folks head out into the timid spring sun and make the exact same mistake with their hydrangeas. They take their bypass pruners, make what looks like a perfectly logical, tidy spring cut... and just like that, they've guaranteed a completely flowerless summer. Hydrangeas are forgiving, but they don't forgive this. There are half a dozen gentle wake-up chores they actually appreciate right now to set them up for July. But if you’re itching to tidy up your beds this weekend, do yourself a favor. Before you snip a single branch, make sure you aren't doing the one "tidy-up" job they absolutely despise. Let them be until you know what you're looking at.
