I always say that if you think you've seen all the oddities when it comes to plumeria (I've grown and propagated 1000's of them over a 35+ year period), there's more oddities to come.

In 2020, obtained seeds from Elaine Williams of one of her PSA registered varieties (again, thank you, Elaine), Pink Lady Bouquet. I kept three of those seedlings. Two of those three seedlings have bloomed this year. The first one began to bloom early summer, and I named her "DD's Pink Starburst" (see first photo). The second one began to bloom yesterday, but I haven't given her a name yet (see second photo). DD's Pink Starburst's flowers would be something that you might suspect from seeds of a "pink" variety. But wow, that second seedling's flowers are a beautiful yellow. The only similarities with Pink Lady Bouquet are the shape of the petals and the large size of the flowers (4"). Pink Lady Bouquet's flowers are shown in the third photo.

It's so much fun to grow from seed!

Of eight seed-pods that were on my Scott Pratt tree, only two remain viable. The tree is getting tall, so the photos of those pods that are aborting aren't very good. A couple of pods have already dropped and four other seed-pods are withering and will drop as well. The two pods that began to grow about 4 months ago are still looking good. The chances of having viable seeds have greatly diminished though.

As a reminder, in the 5-6 decades that Scott Pratt has been named, there has never been seed-pods that have matured and thus, there have never been viable seeds obtained from Scott Pratt. Fingers are still crossed.

I want to thank one of my plumeria friends, Diana Francis, who was gracious enough to share some of her prized plumeria cuttings with me. I've now added these 9 varieties to the 50 or so varieties that I'm growing. I began to root these new cuttings on August 21/22, and about a dozen of those cuttings have now rooted. These 9 varieties are: Peachy King, Intense Rainbow, Mardi Gras, Fireblast, Gold OP #3, Coral Cream, Dwarf Yellow (may be Obtusa Dwarf Yellow), Musk Rainbow, and Toba's Fire.

So far, the only variety of these 9 that has bloomed is Coral Cream, and those flowers are gorgeous.

Here is my Coral Cream's flowers as well as groups of plumeria rooted from July through October, 2024.

I have four Florida customers that I need to get orchids/plumeria shipped out to. I had no way to do this until we got power restored and had a UPS office up and running. I'm told that the UPS office reopened today. I'll do my best to get everything shipped tomorrow. I have two folks that were scheduled to pick up orchids/plumeria, and I'll contact you two and get a pick up rescheduled.

Whoopie!!!!!!!!! We just got power again. It's been down since Wednesday afternoon. Fingers crossed that it stays on. It came on this morning at 2:00 AM, but went off after 10 minutes.

After trimming most of the leaves from my in-ground plumeria, I found twice the number of seed-pods that I thought I had. Some of these were impossible to see with all the lush leaves. I don't know what sort of winds we'll have with Hurricane Milton, but I sure hope that at least some of these seed-pods will survive. I've supported them in all sort of ways, and for some, I've soft-wired them to a stake that spans two tips. Time will tell whether I've done any good.

Here's some of those seed-pods.

Here's some of what I've done with my plumeria leaf removal. I've laid the 1 gal. potted ones on their sides. Removing the leaves reduces the wind drag substantially as well as getting weight off the tips. I've removed and bagged well over 300 lb. of plumeria leaves over a two week period.

Our county just updated their "Hurricane Watch" to a "Hurricane Warning". That's not what I wanted to see. I'll finish whatever preparations that I can get done today and then hunker down for the winds and heavy rain coming in Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
