The M18 Recoilless R***e was an anti-tank weapon employed by the US Army during World War II and the Korean War.

Capable of being used over-the-shoulder or mounted on a tripod, the M18 fired a 57x303mm shell capable of devastating armored vehicles.

Eventually, more modern heavy weapon designs would render the M18 obsolete, and though it did see limited use during the Vietnam War, it was retired from standard military use in the 1960s.

This logging wagon (circa 1890) was generously donated to the museum by Joe Hanson. Before that, it was used by the Anaconda Company to transport logs as part of the Anaconda Smelting Operation.

Heavy and solid, these wagons were an invaluable tool for loggers throughout Montana and other parts of the country. Under Marcus Daly, the Anaconda Company established one of the largest smelters in Montana at the time, five times larger than smelters in nearby Butte. Even today, Anaconda is known as "Smelter City", even if Daly's original smelters have been decommissioned.
