Bagworms are currently hatching and beginning to feed. We've already spotted them in several areas! These caterpillars are famous for building cone-shaped bags out of silk and bits of the host tree, making them look like small pinecones or ornaments.

• The Danger: They are especially devastating to evergreens like junipers and arborvitae. Because evergreens don't regrow needles as quickly as deciduous trees regrow leaves, heavy infestation can be fatal in a single season.

• What to do: If you can reach them, you can hand-pick the bags and destroy them. For larger trees, professional insecticide applications in early summer are the most effective way to stop them before they strip your branches bare.
