Even Professionals Miss Things — Here’s a Real Example
I wanted to share something real that happened to me recently — because it’s a good reminder that even experienced professionals can fall short sometimes.
We recently installed a solar system on our home. After installation and permission to operate (PTO), I was told everything was up and running and that I could download the app to monitor production, battery storage, etc. As far as I understood, the system was live and producing.
For about a month and a half, the app showed zero solar production. I assumed it was winter — snow, short days — normal seasonal stuff. But something didn’t feel right.
So I called the company and asked them to check it out.
They sent field techs out… they discovered the exterior disconnect breaker had never been physically turned on. The panels had never actually been "energized". They said I was supposed to know this even though I was told everything was "good to go".
So for six weeks, I owned a solar system that wasn’t producing power — and I was still paying full utility bills.
Now — here’s the important part.
Mistakes happen. In construction, in solar, in every trade. No company, including ours, is immune from human error.
The real lesson here is about process, communication, and verification.
At Choate Builders, we talk a lot about:
• Clear communication
• Accountability
• Doing the right thing
• Making the process easy for the client
This was a great reminder that it’s not enough to assume something was explained, or assume a client understands a technical step. Critical items need to be clearly communicated, documented, and confirmed.
Never assume. Always verify.
Even after nearly 30 years in construction, I’m still learning. That’s part of being a professional.
