Here’s a looooong line of american hazelnuts, growing to rescue to provide privacy and replace lawn. There’s also a small area in the front, where native strawberry replaces the lawn all the way to the street. As the end of the row, we mixed in a few other shade-tolerant shrubs :)

Terracing the soil makes sense. It makes even more sense to plant woodland understory, with roots to hold the soil! Witchhazels growing to the rescue.

Hazelnut hedge only put in a few years ago! They grow fast, are not too wide, and provide great visual screening.

Rain barrel time! Check out how you can open/close the diverter on the downspout (the metal bit, closed in this photo). This is a great photo of how we install our rainbarrels.
