People ask me why I have so many black swallowtails in my garden. The answer is :
Fennel, ammi and rue planted in my borders away from my raised veg beds.

These plants are much larger than parsley, dill and cilantro. They are also less exposed keeping the larva safer from birds. These 3 host plants are near other strong plants the larva can easily crawl to and turn transform into a chrysalis.

Later in September all 3 are near leaf mulch great for cover for the period of diapause. This makes it easy for the larva to safely make the journey from host plant to cover.

A few very kind people have asked if I would be willing to do a garden tour.
Because I have so many birds nesting in my garden right now I don’t want to disturb them with a tour.
So, for now, I decided to share some pics I took yesterday.
I did all of this myself over the last 18 years. No landscaping crew just serious woman power!

Winter savory:
A perennial herb that taste like oregano and thyme, does well in a pot/ window box or the front of a sunny border. Looks great all summer and is a bee magnet!

Lemon balm:
Does well in a pot ( in the mint family so spreads quickly) or in the ground. The leaves smell like lemon and have more homeopathic uses than I can list. Also makes great tea.

Both seedlings will be out for pick up at 11:00
