The Gorgas Museum, University of Alabama is a recent successful historical restoration project in budget and no change orders. We peeled 3/8ths of an inch of lead base paint off of the Gorgas House to dispose of the lead based paint.

Much of the project focused upon taking the Gorgas House back to it’s historical setting and finish. The previous construction caused leaked damage to the interior so much so that one of the rungs had to be sent back to France to be rewoven.

We deployed 7 architectural sheets to reinstall the historic picket fence. This being an institutional setting and one that was the most popular tailgating locations on campus the fence was fortified well beyond the typical picket fence. There are 2 structural grade stainless steel “C” channels backing the IPE wooden horizontals holding the pickets. The fence is all of IPE wood a wood so dense that it is much like steel but at the same time one of the few South American woods that will hold paint. The pickets are spaced by computer and all are exactly the same distance apart. The pickets are attached with non-retractable furniture bolts such that they cannot be removed and will not wind up as trophies on fraternity walls somewhere. The fence is anchored in a 2 x 2 concrete curb footing. A wrecker would not be able to rip them up.

So if the losing team’s patrons are angry enough to take the loss out on the fence they will break their legs should the kick it.

This was one of the most daring architectural-construction feats of all times and built for just 8 million dollars. I do not believe it could be built now for 800 million.

The St Louis Gateway Arch looks very simple but due to the ever narrowing compound tetrahedral section and elliptical arch shape it made for a challenging construction venture.

The Bryce Hospital Restoration, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, joint ownership the Alabama Department of Mental Health & the University of Alabama affected us more than any other project we have ever worked on just due to the humanity of it.

Plus there is such a history here and add to that the extreme decline of the buildings. We have hundreds of photos we will put some of them here over the next few weeks. We had a separate project for the University of Alabama on the west wing of Bryce.

In order to restore it we had to survey it and measure every square inch of it as there were no existing drawings. In doing this we would come across notes left my patients who had climbed into these attics and crawls spaces

This is Brierfield Baptist Church. The Alabama Historical Commission asked if we would help restore it. They told us at the time that it was the oldest Baptist Church in the state. It is listed on the Historical American Building Survey. I believe it still had an active congregation at the time but do not know of this now.

Memorial Stones Created for David Housel and the City of Auburn and installed along the sidewalks in front of merchant stores. We actually found Auburn orange and blue granite in Italy. However, they chose the gray granite. Some of the newer stones have been in black as well.

CALUMET OFFICE CENTER - Nashville TN
Design & Model I Created for the Offices of the United Southern & Southeastern Native American Tribes While a Senior Associate for Area Design Firm.
The design is a see-through building because Native Americans did not leave marks upon the land. Their structures were wooden and earthen and except for burial mounds. The upended logs coming towards and approaching the building are a reminder of their natural culture. Rushing water flanks the entrances.
