The trend this season is food gardens! We just finished this beautiful garden today, which features our framed cedar fence, raised cedar beds, in-ground beds for perennials such as herbs, flowers and blueberry bushes, and gravel foundation. This family is so excited to grow this their own food this year with their five and seven-year-olds!

50,000 people marching downtown, plus a statewide economic strike and dozens of protests involving thousands more throughout the metro area and state. All with a high of -9F plus wind chill. So proud of Minnesota.

To my garden account friends, permaculture friends etc. in other parts of the country - can you please share something, anything, about what is happening here? Our constitutional rights don’t come free - they need to be protected and upheld. And when our leaders aren’t doing that, it’s up to us, the people, to make ourselves heard. This is not just about Minnesota, this affects us all. Thanks guys 💚

At this point in the fall, if you have a bunch of scrappy looking trees in your yard that still have green leaves, I’m sorry to say but they might be invasive buckthorn! Watch the video to learn about a few more key characteristics. Of course, before you go cutting down a bunch of trees in your yard, it would be a good idea to do some additional research to make sure you have identified the trees correctly. 🤓

So go take a look in your yard – do you have any buckthorn? Now is the best time to get rid of it!

It’s hard to capture the beauty of a full landscape. This Eden Prairie project is just one year old and it is blowing us away with its luscious growth and beauty. With over a thousand native plants and edibles including hazelnut, chokeberry, blueberry, peach, apple, black raspberry, cherry, serviceberry, gooseberry, currants, wild strawberries, veggies and more, this is a true example of a native and edible landscape at its best.

We are booking the last weeks of our season now - installs for September and October. Get in touch through the contact page on our website ASAP!

When we plant our native landscapes, we use plugs, which are basically young plants grown in small cells that don’t look like much. But don’t be misled by their small stature. Native plants can grow fast! Check out this handful of spring blooming species that we planted as plugs just last year! Native plants are so amazing!

Now disclaimer: native plants don’t always grow this fast. Especially if your site conditions have some challenges, such as compacted soil, heavy deer or rabbit pressure, or less than ideal sun or water conditions, your plants are going to need more time to come into their own. There is a saying that says “In year one they sleep, in year two they creep, and in year three they leap!” This is an easy way to remember that native plants will first focus on establishing a strong root system and may not show above-ground growth right away.

Special thanks to our awesome native plant suppliers and Glacial Ridge Growers!

Want to be prepared to grow more of your own food this year? Join us for a 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴-𝘰𝘯 seed starting workshop - meaning you will get your hands in the dirt and go home with your own seeded pots! ✨

𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽
Date: Sunday, February 23
Time: 11am -12:30pm
Location:
1610 170th St E, Shakopee, MN 55379
Cost: $20
Link to info and register: https://www.rustichillsgardenco.com/public-workshops/seedstarting (link in stories or follow link in bio)

You will learn two methods: winter sowing and indoor seed starting. Workshop attendees will get to participate in both types of seed starting and bring their newly planted items home. The workshop presentation will also discuss materials, timing and methods for starting additional seeds at home, as well as how to care for young seedlings until they are ready to go into the garden.

👉👉👉Please bring 2 empty, cleaned, transparent or semi-transparent one-gallon milk jugs or 2-liter bottles to make your “mini greenhouses” for winter sowing! We will provide the rest!
