Let's talk about roots and rain. Most yards are covered from lot line to lot line with grass. If you have ever dug a hole in your lawn, you will know that the roots don't go very far. These grass-covered yards are not very permeable, only slightly better than concrete. Why? Well, we walk, mow and stand on it, compacting the soil over time, and the root structure is only one depth, shallow. When we combine the lawns and the grids of streets and sidewalks that humans created, we have a disaster situation for our watershed.

Don’t even get me started on the plants sold at pond supply stores... is so important to plan wisely. There is almost always a native plant that serves a better purpose and they don't harm humans, wildlife or devistate native species.

Some are garden thugs, others are maintenance hogs or one-hit wonders. Don't bother planting these shrubs.

Not only are they edible many provide benefits to the soil and neighboring plants. Dandelion is a pioneer species, it breaks up hard compacted soil with its resilient long taproot allowing water and oxygen to permeate the ground. It is also edible and very nutritious. Know your "weeds".
