At Dead Ash Services we are here to build lasting relationships in our community not just collect a paycheck and disappear.

We provide more than just tree work. We bring hard work, dedication, experience, and real solutions to problems before they become disasters.

Sometimes trees looks full of life with plenty of foliage but are still a disaster waiting to happen. This red maple looked like it was still holding on until the wind proved otherwise.

It was a co-dominant, multi-stemmed red maple that had been heavily damaged by carpenter ants. One-third of the tree failed during the wind, landing into a pine tree and across telecom lines. When I first came out, it was more of an emergency situation, so instead of worrying about pictures, I got straight to work getting the failed stem safely off the lines.

We were able to remove that section without damaging the telecom lines and with only minimal damage to the pine tree it had fallen into.

Since one stem had already failed from internal decay and ant damage, the remaining two stems needed to come down before they ended up on the telecom lines — or worse.

This is exactly why tree inspections matter.

If you notice:

* Holes in the trunk with dirt or sawdust-like material inside
* Cracks that appear to be spreading
* Multiple stems splitting from the same trunk
* Dead limbs, hollow spots, decay, or soft wood
* Trees leaning toward your house, driveway, fence, or utility lines

Don’t ignore it.

All it takes is one good gust of wind for a compromised tree or limb to come down and cause serious property damage — or seriously injure someone.

If you’re looking at your trees and aren’t sure what to look for, reach out. I’d be happy to come do a walk-through with you, inspect your trees, and help make sure your property is safe for you, your family, your friends, and your neighbors.

It’s the time of year when the leaves do just that for the year. Here are 5 reasons you should not remove the leaves from your yard.

Natural Fertilizer and Soil Enrichment
Fallen leaves decompose into rich organic matter called leaf mold which improves soil structure, retains moisture, and provides essential nutrients for plants and grass. It’s nature’s own compost system free and effective.

Habitat for Pollinators and Wildlife
Many beneficial insects like butterflies, bees, and beetles overwinter in leaf litter. Removing leaves destroys their habitat and reduces biodiversity. Birds and small mammals also depend on these insects for food.

Moisture Retention and Erosion Control
A layer of leaves acts like mulch, locking in soil moisture and preventing erosion during heavy rain or wind. This helps reduce water bills, keeps your soil healthier, and minimizes runoff pollution.

Saves Time, Money, and Energy
Raking, bagging, and hauling leaves costs time, effort, and sometimes disposal fees. Letting leaves naturally break down or mulching them with your mower saves both labor and money.

Reduces Landfill Waste and Emissions
Yard waste makes up millions of tons of landfill material each year. When leaves decompose in landfills, they release methane which is a potent greenhouse gas. Keeping them in your yard instead helps lower your carbon footprint.

The Myth of Tree Topping:
"It’s like a haircut – sometimes it’s necessary and a tree can always grow out of a bad one"

The Myth
Since plant scientists and arborists unanimously agree that tree topping is an unjustifiable tree management practice, I assumed that the word had trickled down to practitioners and their customers. Yet this summer, like every year before, brought a new crop of buzz-cut trees. It also brought a new crop of excuses (culled
from the internet):
• “I want to trim the top branches off a 75' tall maple because it’s causing excess shade in my yard.
I want the tree to live, but just be smaller.”
• “I wouldn't make the sweeping generalization that all tree topping is bad…Locals here whack their weeping willows every few years and those trees seem to relish the opportunity to fill out again.”
• “It is necessary for the electric company to top trees that grow into the power lines.”
• “The trees look like hell for a while but seem to get used to the treatment.”

The Bottom Line
• Tree topping is never a justifiable pruning practice; it increases tree health problems and is aesthetically unappealing
• A topped tree will require constant maintenance and has an increased potential to become hazardous
• Hazardous trees are a liability and ultimately the property owner is responsible for any damage
hazard trees cause
• Certified arborists and other legitimate landscape professionals do not practice tree topping
• There are acceptable pruning techniques designed to keep trees away from power lines and other structures
• If problems caused by a tree cannot be solved through acceptable management practices, the tree should be removed and replaced with plant material more appropriate for the site
• Think about the mature size of a tree and where it will grow relative to power lines and other structures before you plant it
