Mark Warpenburg, Beez Artist Statement
My subject matter deals with nature, altering scale and perspective. Educated at Indiana University, my Major discipline was oil on canvas with a secondary love of sculpture. During the past 15 years I began to combine the two. All work up to a year ago was 100% oil on canvas or shaped canvas. At the end of my Monarch Nursery Series, I started adding assemblage into some of my work, although all work at this time is still mostly oil on canvas. Color and color choices are very important to me. While imitating shape and color, I may still alter both to fit the need. Beez Series deals with the beauty and plight of bees, the man-caused endangerment, and possibly extinction of life as we know it. This series is intended to bring attention to the beauty of this creature and the repetition of naturally occurring geometric shape. A nature supporting nature being interrupted by man to the point of extinction is the message. I hope the viewer is inspired to get involved with controls we need to put on Monsanto and other chemical companies that are poisoning and killing out planet. Bees are a key component to our food cycle not only necessary to sustain the human food supply, but also all plant and animal life. The loss of Bees will change life as we know it, forever. Currently there are eight works in the Beez Series. The Exhibit will also include floral works from my Natures Medicine series and other floral works. Also, the collaborative work “Troop 4877” will be featured. A collaboration with members of Plainfield IN Girl Scout Troop 4877.
