Example; Roofing company comes out and says they can get your 20 year roof replacement covered by a storm damage claim. The person gets on your roof to "inspect" but all they actually do is rip a couple shingles off and throw them on the ground and take photos of staged "storm damage". They then ask the homeowner to sign their ipad or clipboard but what they are actually signing is a contract with a public adjuster who has a flat fee for trying to haggle with your insurance company. You end up owing the public adjuster, usually unknowingly, regardless if you go with that roofer for the project or not! Door-to-door sales people and public adjusters both need to have special registration/licensing with the Dept of Consumer Protection in CT! If you have been scammed by one of these shoddy roofing companies, report it to the Dept of Consumer Protection (NOT the Better Business Bureau as they are a scam too)! Here's an article from the state of Connecticut for guidelines on what to look out for with these types of scams.
