Calochortus macrocarpus and Eriogonum umbellatum. Also known as sagebrush mariposa lily (or green-banded star-tulip, which is a bit more fun and apt- notice the greenish stripe down the petal) and sulphur buckwheat. The buckwheat is common along rocky ridgelines in the Cascades where butterflies are currently causing a quiet, beautiful ruckus. The mariposa lily pictured is growing in the Mosier area, where it was battered by heavy winds all last week, and in some places a bit tattered but still bringing in the pollinators who tend to linger long in its fuzzy, fringy fueling station.
