Cold weather is coming please read our recommendations…
Friday through Monday we will experience temperatures and wind chills that many homes' heating systems are NOT designed for.... double digit Negative numbers! We wanted to reach out to all of our customers to help answer your heating questions in preparation for the arctic blast.
Newer homes will struggle to maintain temperature, and older homes will NOT maintain temperature. The temperature inside WILL drop below setpoints while the heating system is working at full capacity.
* Please raise the temperature in your home to a minimum of 70 degrees or 2 to 4 degrees above your normal setting (if normal setting is 70 degrees) on Friday to allow your home to acclimate and get ahead of the cold.
* Take all programmable thermostats out of setback mode and set on a permanent HOLD at 70 degrees or higher.
* If you have a furnace; replace the filter.
* Keep garage doors closed.
* Limit opening exterior doors.
* Make sure air vents and radiators are not blocked or obstructed.
* If you have a 90%+ afue furnace and boiler, you must keep the intake and exhaust clear of ice and snow. During these cold temperatures, ice can build up. A 90%+ afue furnace and boiler have 2 white PVC pipes; an exhaust pipe, and an intake pipe that are generally on the side or back of your home.
* Refrain from using pellet stoves or supplemental heat forms if you have a water-based heating system. The pipes WILL freeze. It is best to use the water-based system as your primary heat source in weather events like this.
If the temperature in your home is dropping and your radiators are HOT with boiler systems or you have HOT air coming out of your vents with furnaces, DO NOT PANIC. Your system will likely not be able to recover until temperatures rise and the windchill diminishes. Our heating systems can not overcome temperatures of -20 to -30. They are sized to operate at 0 degrees to -15 degrees outdoor temp depending on the system. The key is to NOT panic with falling temps inside your home, if you have heat coming out of your registers. It is doing all it can!
For our seasonal customers, please adjust your systems in accordance to the guide above if your home is not winterized. If you are unable to make the trip up to your seasonal property or do not have a wifi/remote enabled thermostat we are offering assistance at a reduced rate of $50.00 per call to send a tech out to adjust your system setpoints to avoid frozen or ruptured pipes. Please note this service will be provided on a first come first serve basis, we expect slots to fill up quickly. You can schedule by contacting Leslie at 603-393-1817.
To help minimize temperature loss, you can boil water, make soup or stews, or bake something - it helps introduce humidity and warmer temperatures into your home.
Please check on neighbors and elderly residents during these extreme temperatures. Stay warm and safe this weekend!
Thank you,
Jason and Leslie Heaton
