Great work starts with great people! 😊

This year, HKP headed to Western Washington University for our annual office retreat to reflect on our team's growth throughout 2026 and brainstorm ways to keep up our momentum throughout the rest of the year and into 2027. (A big year for HKP! More to come 😉)

We spent the day leaning into our Strengths and learning how each of us contributes to the team. Touring WWU gave us a chance to look back on the projects we've completed on campus over the years, and we're grateful for such a long-time community partner who continues to inspire us along the way!

Then things got a little silly. Presentation Karaoke had us practicing our public speaking skills by improvising random topics with surprise words and phrases tossed in. After a serious conversation about our goals and the project opportunities ahead, we toured the recent Kulshan Community Land Trust project and wrapped up at Beach Cat Brewing with a round of Exquisite Co**se. The drawings were questionable, but the laughs were not.

Thankful for this team and excited for what's next!

From building staircases to celebrating 100 years of learning, the HKP team was busy from dawn to dusk in the community last weekend!

We were honored to lend a hand to Skagit Habitat for Humanity for their 2026 Women Build event (Karyn learned how to use power tools!). Then we got all dressed up to celebrate Skagit Valley College's Centennial Gala and a century of education and community impact throughout the Skagit Valley. We're forever grateful to be a part of a community that builds, learns, and grows together.

Old building materials are new again at HKP! Our recent project at Edmonds Elementary School was a new mass timber covered play structure featuring glue-laminated beams and Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels. Similar to, but distinct from, last year’s steel structure, this is our first CLT project, and it's been exciting to watch it come together.

Thanks to the experts at Howard S. Wright, the glulam beams and CLT panels were installed at impressive speed (a little slower than video though), including this monumental panel lift. We’re looking forward to seeing this beautiful structure in use and hope it inspires their students!

A very special thank you to the Edmonds-Woodway High School Pep Band for their rendition of Also sprach Zarathustra (best known as the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey).

HKP Architects recently developed a long-range plan for this Agate Bay property that improves accessibility and functionality, while modernizing the home and preserving its connection to the beautiful Lake Whatcom setting. Design goals include aging-in-place features, a new all-weather sunroom, reorganized exterior decks and patios, and a renovated garage ADU designed for greater comfort and usability.

After 10 years at HKP, Austin Miles is transitioning from the world of architecture to construction, taking a new Project Engineer position with TRICO Companies, LLC. He is a dedicated, passionate team member who brought so much to HKP and our clients. We will miss him deeply and wish him all the best in this new venture!

By addressing the aging infrastructure, limited parking, and operational challenges, this study lays the foundation for a more modern, efficient facility that will help Skagit Gleaners meet the needs of our community for years to come.

HKP had the honor of designing this thoughtfully crafted custom home located above Padilla Bay in the idyllic town of Bay View. The owners were ready to downsize into an age-in-place home without sacrificing their beautiful views, comfort, or connection to the landscape. This space was designed not just to live in, but to thrive in for decades to come. From preserving a mature tree and views of the iconic church alongside prioritizing energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and accessibility, every detail was carefully considered.
