They're coming. If you lived in Northern Virginia in 2004, you know what to expect. If you didn't, you're in for quite the experience. This is the year of the 17-year cicada in our area. There will be trillions of them for about six weeks in early summer. They will be almost everywhere. They are harmless. They are loud. They are high in protein, if you're into that. They don't social distance. They're kinda clumsy flyers. Dogs like them. There will be a lot more information from all kinds of media outlets as their visit nears. It's a phenomenon of nature to be enjoyed. Can't wait!

It took thousands of years for our native wildlife species to adapt and create the relationships they need for survival. That is why native berries contain exactly the right nutrients to support the native birds in that same habitat. Not all non-natives are bad, but if you plant a new shrub or tree, please make it a native one. Below are examples of berries native to the Northeast of America. For a more precise overview of these species, and to find those (buckthorn and beauty berry for example) that are native to your eco region, and whether you should leave or remove pokeweed visit: https://plants.usda.gov/

Thanks to Victorian street planners, many British streets were designed to be full of big trees and, with 84% of the population living in urban areas, most people are more likely to encounter trees in the streets than they are in forests.
