This Birmingham home was already beloved. The owners weren't looking to change it, they were looking to grow into it.

As their children married and grandchildren arrived, the house needed to do more: welcome an extended family that entertains frequently, work for daily use as the owners age comfortably in place, and still feel refined throughout.

▫️ A new kitchen with white-oak reeded cabinetry and a culinary-caliber appliance package anchors the main floor.
▫️ A new laundry room with a large stainless utility sink and vertical drying racks gives the owner a customized workspace for flower arranging and clothing care.
▫️ The curbless shower in the renovated primary bath quietly does double duty, both beautiful now, and practical for every year ahead.

Nice manners and good design go hand in hand. The most impactful future-proofing investments occur in the bathroom and on the main level, including curbless showers, bench seating with handheld controls, adjustable vanity heights, and a suite that's available when needed.

Planning ahead and beautiful design are not mutually exclusive. It's not going to feel clinical. It's not going to feel like an afterthought. It's going to feel like your house.

We help families live longer in homes they love. What does that mean?

It means we design not just for aesthetics, but for how you want to live now and in the future. It means that we create beautiful spaces that adapt as your needs change.

The well-appointed kitchen that cooks Thanksgiving meals for twenty works equally well for dinners for two, the main level bathroom is accessible for your grandmother’s Sunday visits, and the wide doors and hallways feel generous enough for strollers as well as wheelchairs.

This is what good residential architecture looks like to us: beautiful homes that are the backdrops for decades of gatherings, quiet moments, milestones, and celebrations.

If this philosophy speaks to you, let’s talk.

One word defines this Birmingham kitchen: light.

When these homeowners came to us soon after moving in, they knew exactly what they wanted. The existing space was dark and closed off; the new one would be anything but. By opening the ceiling to introduce skylights directly above the island and adding a new set of windows and a door from the front porch, natural light now reaches every corner of the room.

When Aging in Place design works at the community level, it looks exactly like this. Cedar Ridge at Kirkwood by the River, a cottage community on the Cahaba River in Birmingham, gave our team the opportunity to embed accessibility into every decision from the ground up.

Our CAPS-certified team designed every detail with intention: zero-step entries, curbless showers with benches and handheld sprayers, slip-resistant tile, and soft material palettes with deliberate contrast to enhance visibility.

When a client comes in with a clear vision, our job is to make it real.

Trip and Ashley Umbach wanted a kitchen that could keep up with a family of five cooks, and we learned a lot building it together. After a decade working with Birmingham families, the best spaces are never just beautiful. They work for how you actually live.

We know, from study after study, that most Americans over the age of 65 want to stay in their homes as they get older. But "want to" isn't a strategy: in fact, it can be a recipe for missing all of the opportunities to get it right.

I recently spoke with VERANDA on aging-in-place design and how thoughtful planning can make a home more comfortable, functional, and future-ready.

Every time I talk about how our residential architecture firm has expertise in aging in place or working with older adults, someone has a story to share. We hear about grandparents, siblings, spouses, children, and parents—how their houses worked for them, until they didn't. People whose loved ones anticipated aging in place but didn't plan for it. There's a distinct difference between those two approaches.

That's why I'm so grateful to Veranda and Grace Haynes Wall for making space for this important conversation, and for understanding that being thoughtful about futureproofing your home and making it aesthetically pleasing are not mutually exclusive.
