Timber Frame HQ

Timber Frame HQ https://timberframehq.com - Go from sketch to structure with our Ready-to-Raise™ Timber Frame Kits, Plans, Custom Design & DIY resource hub.

Tag us to be featured. Conceived in the fall of 2010 and was created to educate and bring folks together with a common goal; to spread the word about timber framing and provide a valuable online resource for everyone. We are achieving this goal by providing a showcase of timber frame house plans, a gallery, construction details, and anything else we can think of. All are welcome to

submit plans, photos, and articles to the site. I realized early on that this site needed to represent the community of skilled craftsmen that is the timber frame community and we hope that we can help you, the community, and help the trade by building this site. One of our primary goals is to increase the awareness of timber framing so more of them get built.

What started as a way to celebrate the Bonners Ferry High School Class of 1976 reunion has grown into a community timber frame project. Working with the Boundary County Fair Board, volunteers, businesses, and donors are helping build a new timber frame pavilion at the fairgrounds that will serve concerts, community events, and gatherings for years to come. The Dave Wenk Memorial Pavilion is a great example of what can happen when a community rallies around a common goal.

Vince Stevenson adapted our 14x18 King Post design into a striking entryway for the timber frame home he's building for his family in Mount Shasta, California. Using Douglas Fir and Sugar Pine, along with 6x8 rafters and 8x10 beams he had on hand, he created a welcoming front porch that complements the home's larger 24x36 Timber Frame HQ design. As Vince put it, "It is a satisfying sight when approaching the house." https://tfhq.link/epf

Framework Friday is here with a mix of residential and agricultural timber frame designs. This week we're showcasing two Ready-to-Raise™ kit proposals: a 36x52 two-story barndominium with a cross-gable entry and a 12x16 two-level tiny house. We also have two custom designs: a 24x36 barn with fenestration planned directly into the frame and a 40x80 gambrel barn.

Whether you're dreaming of a compact getaway, a family home, or a large agricultural structure, timber framing offers endless possibilities.

The Peak Joinery of a Hipped Roof brings multiple rafters together at a single point, requiring precise cuts to ensure proper alignment and load distribution. Each connection must be carefully executed to maintain the integrity and symmetry of the roof.

It’s one of the more complex and visually refined details in roof framing.

The Pegged Bladed Scarf Joint is a traditional method for joining two timbers end-to-end, using interlocking blades and wooden pegs to secure the connection. This design improves alignment and helps resist both tension and bending forces.

It’s a time-tested solution for extending timber length while maintaining strength.
