Not just anybody can install large format tiles such as these 2’x4’ Porcelain tiles. It requires specialized cutters to cut such long tiles, not just a grinder. We have spent the money and had the training to pull of such extraordinary installs. We have to use specified suction cups to lift, maneuver, and set in place using multiple people. Strategically planning a layout takes a lot of time, these tiles don’t just fall into place by accident.
Typical waste on a tile project ranges from 10-15% for standard tile installs. But for large tiles, depending on how cut up the room is, we can expect waste to be 20-30%. Double the amount of mortar as well. To get a solid bed, we must use twice the amount of thinset to achieve a 95% coverage rate required by the TCNA. If you don’t have good coverage or have concerns of good coverage, take a blunt object and tap on the tiles of your home. If they sound hollow, well they are.

Wrapped up a project in Nags Head using 2’x4’ porcelain tiles. Perfectly flush with the existing hardware for a seamless transition! Kitchen floor, bathroom floor, and fireplace hearth! We will be back in the fall to do the whole downstairs of this beach rental with the same tile!
