When most homeowners hear the words French drain, they picture exposed rock, visible grates, and a solution that solves one problem while creating another.
This homeowner in Deerfield, Illinois was dealing with persistent water issues along the side of their property. Runoff from neighboring yards would collect in this area, creating muddy conditions and making it difficult to access the backyard.
Our solution was to combine function and aesthetics by installing a fully permeable stepping stone walkway with a French drain concealed beneath it. The permeable design allows water to move directly into the drainage system, capturing runoff more effectively before it has a chance to pool on the surface.
The result is a drainage system that works harder because it intercepts water from both the surrounding grade and the walkway itself. As an added benefit, the homeowners now have a clean, attractive path from their driveway to the backyard without having to step through mud after every rain.
Good drainage should solve a problem. Great drainage should solve it without anyone noticing it’s there.
