This post is a PSA to choose your tile installer carefully. This elderly couple, in their 80s, called to have me come and look to see why their shower was leaking and had mold. I went to look and found a complete mess. Whoever did this was in no way trained on how to build a shower from the ground up. After talking to the couple I discovered they were charged $8000 for this shower 4 years ago. That’s an unacceptable amount as well. I started the tear out and found so many things wrong. The whole shower floor was laid with some sort of pieced together blue foam (first problem) I found a square cover over a round shower drain. I tore up 12” around the shower and tore out all of the shower floor and started from scratch. The homeowner was thrilled when I found their exact tile at a local flooring company, so matching wasn’t an issue. Once the shower floor was tore up I found that the plumbing under the floor wasn’t installed correctly either. Plumbers came, tore out concrete and reconfigured the pipes. I started the process to put it all back together. The whole shower should have been replaced but they chose just to fix the bottom section. I know there’s a lot of pictures but I want you to see the damage done by someone who wasn’t qualified to do a shower.
