One of the hardiest heirloom plants to add to your landscape is the Crinum Lily. You almost can't kill it, and some varieties bloom all summer long.

I found this seemingly variegated “w**d” in the garden today. I did not think much of it at first since it appears to be just a common species of wild Commelina (Dayflower/Spiderwort); however, after further investigation, I realized that it is not as common as I thought for variegation to appear naturally in this genus. There are variegated cultivars of species within this genus, but I thought it was worth sharing having found one in the wild!

🚨PSA: Wasps Are Not the Enemy

Before you reach for that can of wasp spray, consider this:

Many gardeners, farmers, and homeowners view every wasp as a pest, but the truth is that wasps are some of the hardest-working allies in our landscapes.

Wasps are among nature's most effective pest-control specialists. Many species hunt caterpillars, hornworms, aphids, beetle larvae, and other insects that damage our gardens, crops, flowers, and trees. A single colony can remove thousands of plant-eating pests in a season.

Not only that, but many wasps are pollinators. While they may not receive the same recognition as bees, they regularly visit flowers for nectar and help pollinate a wide variety of plants.

From a horticultural and agricultural perspective, wasps provide two valuable services completely free of charge.

Of course, nests located in high-traffic areas may need to be managed for safety, but a wasp simply flying through your garden is usually doing far more good than harm.

The next time you see a wasp inspecting your flowers, or hunting among your plants, remember: it may be protecting your garden from pests you never even noticed.

Not every insect with a stinger is your enemy. Some are among your garden's best employees.

Is this a w**d in my St. Augustine? Nope. Let’s talk about it.

We’ve had this question several times this week, so I wanted to show y’all exactly what you’re looking at.

This is a St. Augustine grass seed head.

It looks strange because it stands up above the lawn and has that little segmented, bumpy-looking top — so a lot of people think, “Uh oh, is this a w**d?”

Nope. It’s your actual St. Augustine grass.

St. Augustine will sometimes send up seed heads in late spring and early summer, especially when the grass is actively growing, weather has been changing, we’ve had rain, heat, mowing changes, or the lawn is just moving through a growth cycle.

A few things to know:

✳️ It is not a w**d.
Do not spray it with w**d killer.

✳️ It is not something to panic over.
Seeing seed heads does not mean your lawn is ruined.

✳️ You do not need to pull it.
It is attached to your St. Augustine grass.

✳️ Do not skip mowing because you think you’re “letting it seed.”
In our Houston-area lawns, St. Augustine spreads mainly by runners, not by you letting these seed heads mature.

✳️ Just mow like normal.
Keep your mower sharp, mow at a good height, and don’t scalp it.

The biggest mistake would be seeing this, assuming it is a w**d, and spraying something all over your lawn that your St. Augustine did not need.

So if you’re seeing these little green seed heads popping up in your St. Augustine right now, take a breath.

Your lawn is just doing lawn things.

I have had this petunia for nearly two years and I have never seen such an anomaly. This petunia has reliably produced thousands of pure magenta flowers throughout its lifetime. Due to its protection from the frost, it has even bloomed through the winter! Despite the abundance of pure magenta flowers on this petunia throughout the years, today there arose one single flower which was different than the rest. The only magenta that remained on this flower was a single stripe. Is that not cool?

Can you guess which of these lantanas is potted in OUR soil mix and which is potted in generic store-bought soil mix? These are the same variety of the same species, both grown at the same time alongside one another with the exact same watering schedule and sun exposure. The only difference is which soil mix they were grown in. Now tell me, do you have a brown thumb, or are you just using the wrong soil?
