A few gardening wins this week. You gotta celebrate the good things when they come :)

1. My first baby pineapple from a plant I grew from a grocery store pineapple
2. My new coffee tree from . I’ve been envious of my mom‘s massive coffee tree for a while so yay
3. Tons of tiny blossoms on my jujube
4. An overachieving Key lime tree
5. Lots of blueberries coming! Now let’s see if I can get to them before the squirrels

❄️ How do you know a fruit tree is going to recover after a late frost?

Frost damage depends on a lot of things, including the location and elevation, micro climate, what stage of budding and leafing out the tree is in, and how long the cold snap actually lasted.

The good thing is, fruit trees WANT to live and WANT to fruit, so often they will recover and regrow with time.

❄️ How did my fruit trees do in the last freeze? Come with me on a little walk-through to see how everything fared.

These late frosts are honestly the biggest hurdle with growing fruit trees, but hopefully that was the last one for this year!

If you live in the East Texas area, RUN don’t walk to the azalea gardens in Nacogdoches in the next couple of weeks. They are SPECTACULAR this year. 🌺

It’s my espalier apple tree’s turn to be pruned today. 🍎

Espalier fruit trees are a lesson in patience, but I know it’s going to be worth the wait (and work).

The main thing is getting rid of any extra branches that mess up the structure, and shortening the fruiting spurs down to 3-4 buds.

Will I get fruit this year? It’s year 3, so here’s hoping. 🤞

Hardy kiwi pruning!

Just like a grapevine, hardy kiwi can take a lot of pruning and needs to be cut back pretty heavily every winter.

It’s a young vine so it hasn’t fruited yet, but hopefully this will be the year! 🥝

🍒 Another day, another fruit tree to prune!

Pruning a Pluerry (plum/cherry hybrid) is just like any other stone fruit tree:

🌱 Open up the center
🌱 Dead, damaged, or crossing branches
🌱 Head off longer branches just above an outward facing bud

Pomegranate trees want to grow as dense shrubs so they take a little bit of attention to keep the root suckers at bay.

Here are the steps for winter pruning pomegranates:

🌱 Choose four or five main scaffold branches, then prune away any other root suckers all the way to the ground

🌱 Trim any low growing growth to help with airflow and to keep fruit from dragging on the ground

🌱 Look for branches that are crossing, crowded, or will be heavily shaded and remove those next

🌱 If necessary, shorten any super tall branches to keep the tree size manageable

And don’t forget your gloves because pomegranate trees are spiky!

Elderberries bear a ton of fruit, even with zero pruning. But sometimes they might need a little shaping or thinning.

Here’s the order of operations for pruning elderberry bushes:

🌱 Remove any older canes that aren’t fruiting as well, usually at least three or four years old

🌱 Thin out any week or crowded canes

🌱 Shorten super long canes to a reachable height, cutting just above a leaf node

Fig trees are simple to prune, but this tree has one long branch sticking out way too far.

Here’s the three cut method to remove a thicker branch:

1. Cut about halfway through the branch from underneath, a foot or two away from the branch collar.

2. Make a second cut several inches past the first one, sawing all the way through from the top to the bottom.

3. Make your final cut, just passed the branch collar, from the top all the way through to remove the rest of the branch.

🍑 Winter pruning peach trees is simple, especially if you did half the work last summer!

I did some thinning and tip pruning in the late summer, so I only had a little work to do today.

Here are the steps for winter pruning peach trees:
🌱 Get rid of the Ds: Dead, Damaged, or Darn ugly
🌱 Open up the center of the tree
🌱 Thin out crowded or crossing branches
🌱 Head off anything that is too tall to control the height

Happy pruning!
