The is our native Iris douglasiana or Douglas Iris. A beautiful California iris that gets knee-high and slowly spreads by rhizomes to create a 2-4' wide clump. Colors vary from white to every shade of purple you can imagine. There are also some fun gold and burgundy ones. Fast growing, they tend to like cooler temps and some summer water. If growing them away from the coast you'll want to provide them some shade.

The is Romneya coulteri also known as the Matilja Poppy or Fried Egg Plant. These show stopping blooms can reach 6-8" across and are born on the ends of the 4-6' high stems. When in bloom they are truly remarkable.

A California native, they are extremely drought tolerant and can tolerate poor soils. The do not appreciate summer water unless there are drought conditions, and then only a small amount. They are deciduous and will die back in the summer to conserve water. And they can also slowly spread by rhizomes so make sure to give them room!

Creekside at Silverado is a condominium rebuild from the 2017 Napa fires. Studio 1515 worked with the Creekside Homeowners Association to update their approved plant materials for their association while preparing their new landscape plan for their rebuild. The final result incorporates elements from the landscape that they lost to the fire while bringing their new landscape up to current firewise and waterwise standards.

The is Epilobium canum also known as California Fuchsia. This is one of our favorite California native plants. There are quite a few varieties that range in size. Epilobium canum 'Catalina' is a taller shrub that gets 3-5' tall and wide while the variety 'Everett's Choice' stays a tidy 12" tall and 3-4' wide.
The red tubular flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds and pollinators. They are also fire resistant and a great choice for Zone 1 plantings. Their gray foliage is due to mineral uptake that helps reflect sunlight to reduce water loss. These minerals reduce their flammability.

The 🌿 is the Lanceleaf Coreopsis, or Coreopsis lanceolata 'Early Sunrise'. These little semi-evergreen stay only 18" tall and wide but in late spring become covered with nodding heads of 2" wide sunshine yellow flowers. Dead heading them will help them continue blooming into summer. They are fire resistant and drought tolerant while also being rather unpalatable to deer.

As we move through summer our surrounding environments will be drying out further. Now it's time to start working on your surrounding landscape to reduce fire risk to your home. Remove anything flammable within 5' of buildings. Clean up debris, dead and dying plant material*. Check to make sure your irrigation system is working properly.
*Avoid using mowers after 10am or on Red Flag days due to fire risk.

Apricot roses are beautiful flowers that begin to bloom in spring and display a season-long show of color. Low maintenance, vigorous and cold hardy with glossy dark green foliage. They have excellent disease resistance and are ideal for smaller gardens, spreading gently around established plants, in borders or along paths.

Poor drainage from the backyard to the street, inadequate lighting, and outdated design all led to this 20 year old landscape finally undergoing a complete redo. Our goals included complimenting the mid-century, clean architecture of the home, updating the irrigation system to smart technology, installing plants that were low to very low water users, incorporating California natives and pollinator plants, adding more lights and path lights, designing a dynamic dry streambed and boulders for the problem drainage area, and more!
Stay tuned to see the final product!

What's wrong with this picture? We love big beautiful redwoods but these trees have outgrown their area. It's the perfect reminder to consider plant placement in your landscape design. The roots of a tree are strong enough to buckle sidewalks and roadways. If next to a house they can compromise the foundation. 🏑

A tree too close to a house can also make it difficult to maintain the home and it allows rodents onto the roof and into the home through attic vents. You also don’t want to plant trees under power lines unless they get no larger than 10-12’ tall because of the fire risk they can create.
