One of the best wall painting tricks is: Instead of cleaning your brush or roller up everytime you want to take a break, simply wrap it in a plastic bag. Then, place it in your freezer. It won't dry and harden up. When you're ready to paint again, simply remove your brush or roller from the freezer, allow it to thaw for a few minutes, then use it!

PAINTING TIP: Cover the Imperfections! If you have a room in your home that has dents, divots, and other imperfections on the walls, choose a flat type of color to paint the room with. The flat, dull paint will help hide the problem areas.

An increasing popularity for residential garage floors is Epoxy! Epoxy paints make an excellent coating for garage floors and basement floors. Epoxy coatings are durable and resistant to chemical spills. The key to successful application is surface preparation. Epoxy paints have also become available in a water based form making it safe and ideal for indoor applications.

PAINTING TIP: If you don't want a lot of brush marks showing up in your work, always be sure to sand the primer smooth before you apply paint and always paint back "into the wet". That is, finish your brushstroke by heading it into the wet paint you just applied rather than dragging it into an unpainted area.

PAINTING TIP: After painting a room, it's important to keep track of the brand name and color of the paint used, so you can buy more when it comes time to touch-up or repaint the room. Before replacing the light-switch covers and electrical-outlet covers in a newly painted room, write the vital information (brand name, paint color, paint number) onto a piece of masking tape and stick it to the back of a switch plate.

PAINTING TIP: If your walls have holes or cracks, fix them before you start with the paint. Wide cracks and large holes can be "bridged" with fiberglass tape, spackle will fill small holes and cracks, and texturizing products are available to match your existing wall finish.

PAINTING TIP: My room has a chair rail and I am using two colors. Which one goes where? If you want an open, airy look, always paint the portion of the wall below the chair rail with the darker color. This allows the lighter color to dominate.

PAINTING TIP: When painting an average room, you will need a 4-inch brush with a straight edge, a 1 1/2-inch brush for sashes, and a 2-inch brush for trim. When buying brushes, quality is important because it will show in the results. Look for many different lengths of bristles that are split at the ends (this allows the brush to hold more paint), packed tightly and secured into a wooden handle with epoxy, not glue.

PAINTING TIP: What is the best way to decide which color is best for my room? Determine your color scheme by examining your existing furniture, window treatments, and other accessories. Choose your favorite colors in these items and visit your paint dealer to get coordinating color chips. Look at the color chips in the daylight and at night so you will see how lighting will affect your color choices.
