🪴 When is it time to downsize a pot?

Believe it or not, sometimes the best thing you can do for your plant is move it into a smaller pot.

This snake plant had been living in a pot that was much larger than its root system. Over time, the soil stayed wet longer than it should, and the plant stopped producing those thick, upright leaves snake plants are known for.

Instead, the new growth became:

• Thin
• Curled
• Weak
• Floppy

By downsizing the pot, we’re allowing the roots to dry at a healthier rate, encouraging stronger root development and healthier future growth.

🪴 Signs your pot may be too large:

• Soil stays wet for a week or more.
• New growth is thin or floppy.
• Leaves begin curling or losing their rigidity.
• Growth has slowed despite adequate light.

A pot should only be 1–2 inches wider than the root ball. Bigger isn’t always better!

Got fungus gnats? No problem. Let me help you kick those little bastards to the curb! 🌿🪰

This beautiful variegated braided schefflera was purchased from Grounded Roots and eventually developed a fungus gnat problem. It happens to the best of us, but thankfully it’s completely treatable!

For this plant, I:

🪴 Repotted it into fresh soil
🌿 Applied a preventative treatment
🟡 Added yellow sticky traps to catch the remaining adults

One of the biggest causes of fungus gnats is overwatering. I also spent time with the client discussing proper watering habits and the importance of removing dead leaves and other decaying organic matter from the soil, since both create the perfect environment for gnats to thrive.

As a bonus, I also took home two of their empty pots to design and fill with new plants for another area of their home. (Swipe back a few slides to see the finished arrangements! 🌱)

I also recommended adding a plant stand to elevate this beautiful schefflera off the rug and give it the spotlight it deserves.
