To everyone looking for a “good, inexpensive contractor”:

May I ask an honest question?

Would you go to work every day and willingly accept less pay than your skills and experience are worth? Most people wouldn’t. So why is it so common to ask contractors to do exactly that?

When you hire a legitimate contractor, you’re not just paying for someone to swing a hammer. You’re paying for years of experience, licensing, bonding, insurance, continuing education, specialized tools, vehicles, fuel, maintenance, advertising, office expenses, taxes, and the responsibility of standing behind the work if something goes wrong.

Most reputable contractors aren’t getting rich. We’re running businesses with significant overhead while trying to provide quality workmanship and excellent service.

Everyone wants a fair price. That’s completely understandable. But “fair” and “cheap” are not the same thing.

Another thing many homeowners don’t consider is the cost of estimates. When you ask five, eight, or even ten contractors to come to your home for a free estimate, each one is investing time, fuel, vehicle wear and tear, and years of experience to evaluate your project. Only one contractor gets the job, while everyone else absorbs those costs. Free estimates aren’t actually free—they’re simply paid for by the contractor.

If your primary goal is to find the lowest bid, you’ll probably find someone willing to do it. Just remember there’s usually a reason they’re the cheapest. Sometimes it’s because they’re uninsured, unlicensed, cutting corners, using inferior materials, or they simply won’t be around if problems arise.

Quality craftsmanship costs money because it takes time, experience, and accountability.

Instead of asking for the cheapest contractor, consider asking for the best value—someone who communicates well, is properly licensed, bonded, and insured, stands behind their work, and delivers a finished product you’ll be happy with for years.

Every homeowner deserves quality work, and every skilled tradesperson deserves to earn a fair living.

Please remember that contractors are people too. We have families, mortgages, insurance premiums, taxes, equipment payments, fuel costs, and businesses to keep afloat. We aren’t asking for sympathy—we’re simply asking to be treated with the same respect you expect in your own profession.

Respect goes both ways.

Another custom project currently under consideration.

This concept features a custom covered carport designed specifically for the property and sized around the homeowner's vehicle and existing driveway layout.

The goal was to create something that looks like it was always part of the home rather than something that was added later.

Features include:

• New covered parking area

• Black standing seam metal roof

• Black soffit, fascia, gutters, and trim package

• Structural 6x6 support posts

• Future ready electrical options

• Optional recessed lighting, ceiling fan, flood lights, and GFCI outlets

• New concrete driveway improvements

• Designed to complement the existing architecture of the home

One of my favorite parts of this design is how clean and simple it looks while still providing real functionality and protection from the weather.

At The Joy of Construction LLC, every project starts with a plan.

We spend a lot of time making sure the details, proportions, materials, and overall appearance work together before construction ever begins.

What do you think of this concept?

CUSTOM BUILT IN WARDROBE PROJECT

We have been working through the design and planning phase of a custom built in wardrobe system for a client here in Middle Tennessee.

The goal of this project is to replace an existing freestanding wardrobe with a fully custom built storage system designed specifically for the room, the client's storage needs, and the overall style of the home.

The proposed design will feature:

• Full height built in cabinetry

• Two large hanging sections with custom closet rods

• Adjustable shelving designed around the client's preferred storage bins

• Upper cabinet storage for seasonal and long term items

• Lower storage drawers for shoes and general storage

• Mirrored door sections

• Furniture style trim and face frame details

• Custom color selected by the homeowner

Unlike store bought furniture or prefabricated closet systems, every component of this project is being designed and built specifically for the space to create a seamless built in appearance that looks as though it has always been part of the home.

One of the things we enjoy most about custom cabinetry is taking a client's ideas, inspiration photos, measurements, and storage requirements and turning them into a functional finished product that improves both organization and appearance.

We're excited to see this one move from concept to reality.

If you have been considering custom built ins, entertainment centers, mudrooms, home offices, closets, pantry systems, or custom cabinetry for your home, we'd be happy to discuss your project.

Design concepts always start with a vision.

Here's one possible direction for an elevated deck project we are currently discussing with a client.

Features shown in this concept include:

• 16' x 24' elevated deck
• Black aluminum balusters
• Full-width staircase
• Horizontal underpinning for a cleaner finished appearance
• Pressure-treated construction
• Reinforced support system
• Clean, timeless design

One of the biggest advantages of creating renderings like this is giving homeowners the opportunity to visualize the finished project before construction begins. It allows us to discuss options, refine details, and make adjustments before the first board is ever installed.

Would you leave this deck open, add a covered roof section, or fully cover the entire deck?

Another step closer on our own bathroom remodel.

This week was one of those moments where the project finally starts looking like what we envisioned from the beginning.

The black grout is now complete, the black trim is installed, and the contrast between the floor, niche, trim, and shower tile completely transformed the space.

The imported matte black floor tile, black grout, black niche, and light shower walls came together even better than we expected.

The custom pocket door is currently being built in the shop and will be installed soon.

We were hoping to install the toilet this week as well, but after opening the box we found it damaged from the factory. Not exactly the surprise we wanted, but that's construction sometimes. You adjust, get a replacement ordered, and keep moving forward.

Still remaining:

• Replacement toilet installation
• Pedestal sink installation
• Pocket door installation
• Plumbing trim-out
• Hardware installation
• Final punch list and cleanup

The finish line is finally starting to come into view.

We're looking forward to sharing the completed bathroom once everything is installed and the final details are wrapped up.

Not every remodel starts because someone wanted something “new.”

Sometimes it starts because the floor under your bathtub is failing.

This bathroom at our own home started as a simple update and quickly turned into a full structural, plumbing, electrical, and waterproofing rebuild once demolition exposed what was really happening underneath.

The original tub area was sinking. The floor system had to be lifted, stabilized, rebuilt, and properly supported before a single finish material could even be considered.

That meant:
• Jacking up and stabilizing the floor structure
• Installing new support piers underneath the home
• Rebuilding and reinforcing framing with new joists and sistered supports
• Complete plumbing replacement with updated fittings throughout
• Repairing a broken vent pipe hidden beneath the old floor and vanity area
• Running all new ductwork and vent connections
• Installing a proper bathroom exhaust fan since the bathroom originally had none
• Full electrical rework so lights, fan, and switches all operate independently and correctly
• Installing additional wall blocking throughout for future hardware, shelving, towel hooks, and accessories

Once the structure and mechanicals were finally corrected the finish work could begin:
• Full Schluter waterproofing system
• Complete drywall replacement throughout the bathroom
• New bathtub installation
• Large format 12x24 wall tile installation
• Matte black imported Italian floor tile installation
• Custom recessed niche with black mosaic accent
• Precision tile layout planning and leveling system installation
• Fully custom built pocket door fabricated from raw materials in house
• Sherwin Williams Emerald low VOC paint system throughout due to latex sensitivities

One of the coolest details in this remodel is the floor tile itself. These matte black tiles were leftover special order material imported from Italy and originally installed at the Opryland splash pad area. As far as we know, there are only two places with this exact tile:
• Opryland splash zone
• Our bathroom

Still left to complete:
• Black grout installation on walls and floors
• Paint and install the custom built pocket door
• Pedestal sink installation
• New toilet installation
• Final plumbing trim out
• Finish details and cleanup

A lot of people only see the final photos online.

What they usually never see are the structural repairs, plumbing corrections, electrical upgrades, waterproofing, framing repairs, layout planning, broken cuts, late nights, and problem solving that happen behind the scenes before a project ever starts looking beautiful.

This one has taken time because client projects always come first, but we are finally getting close to the finish line and excited to see it completed the right way.

We have been a little behind on posting lately, but this one deserved to be shared.

This is a full custom covered deck build we recently completed, and it turned out exactly how it should.

From the very first layout to the final walkthrough, every step of this project was done with intention, precision, and pride in the work.

Measurement is the measurement.
Square is square.
Plumb is plumb.
Level is level.

That is the standard on every job we take on.

What you are seeing here is the full process from start to finish. Not just the final result, but the work that goes into doing it right.

• Layout and framing built clean, straight, and true
• Full covered roof system for year round use and protection
• Tongue and groove ceiling finished in a custom gray tone
• Recessed lighting and ceiling fans installed evenly and correctly
• Custom railing system with black metal accents
• Wide, comfortable stair access built for everyday use
• Fully wrapped underpinning to close everything in and give it a finished look

This is more than just a deck.

This is an extension of the home. A space built to be used daily, to host family, and to enjoy for years to come.

We take pride in doing things the correct way, not the fastest way. That is why we consistently deliver 5 star results and continue to earn 5 star reviews from our clients.

This homeowner has been an absolute pleasure to work with from start to finish, and we appreciate the trust they placed in us to bring this vision to life.

It is already time to stain this one, and we will be coming back to take care of that as well.

If you are thinking about adding something like this to your home, reach out and we will walk you through it the right way from start to finish.

🚨 HOMEOWNERS — QUICK QUESTION 🚨

Do you know if your home has lead based paint?

If your house was built before 1978, there is a very real chance it does. Most people have no idea… until work starts and dust is everywhere.

That is where problems begin.

We just became officially EPA Lead Safe Certified, and here is what that actually means for you:

When we step into your home, we are not just “doing work”

We are controlling the entire environment

✔ Full containment to isolate the work area

✔ Air scrubbers running with HEPA filtration

✔ Ventilation fans and ducting pushing contaminated air outside

✔ Everything tied into proper vacuum and filtration systems

No dust drifting through your house

No exposing your family to something that should have been handled correctly from the start

This is the difference between hiring someone cheap… and hiring someone who actually knows what they are doing

👉 If your home was built before 1978, comment “OLDER HOME” below

👉 Or message us directly and we will walk you through what to look for before starting any project

And if you know someone with an older home, share this with them it could save them from a serious mistake

At The Joy of Construction LLC we do not just install projects for clients. We live this craft every single day.

This custom workspace build was designed, built, stained, and finished in house from the ground up.

Every piece was measured, cut, and dialed in to create a clean, functional setup that will last.

Build details

• Custom butcher block top with extended depth modification

• Three coat Minwax True Black finish on all cabinetry

• Three coats of protective Polycrylic on cabinets, shelving, and butcher block top for durability

• Adjustable shelving for full flexibility

• Real wood backing for warmth and contrast

• Built to be both functional and sharp in appearance

This project is in the final stretch. Remaining items include custom drawer faces, the center backsplash trim piece we fabricated, and base trim at the cabinet leg area to fully finish the install the right way.

We also want to give a solid shout out to our brother Donnie Blunk, owner of Blunk Custom Carpentry, for lending a hand during installation. Quality people working together always shows in the final product.

No shortcuts. No prefab shortcuts. Just careful layout, clean joinery, and proper finishing.

This is the same level of care we bring to every client project, whether it is a full renovation or custom built ins.

If you are planning a project and want it done the right way the first time, reach out to us.
