Something to remember going into our 4th of July holiday!

Happy Independence Day everyone! Remember to celebrate safely! 🌭🍔🎆🎇🎉🇺🇸

Let's hear it for Lt. Jeremy Defee for going above and beyond his call of duty!

On Friday, June 28, Lt. Defee was traveling through Sterlington when he noticed smoke nearby. After rerouting to investigate, he discovered a house on fire along the exterior by the carport.

Defee, also a volunteer firefighter, was able to extinguishing the fire with the home's garden hose before it spread inside. Fortunately, a juvenile inside was able to get out safely.

In investigating the cause of the fire, Defee learned that the juvenile had recently popped fireworks outside, placing the discarded materials into the trash can located on the side of the home before returning inside. The fireworks caught fire inside the container, which then spread to the exterior of the house.

While we want to applaud Lt. Defee for his awareness, initiative and life and property-saving actions, we also want everyone to remember a top tip of fireworks safety this holiday week:

💧Always wet down expended fireworks materials before discarding them. Consider placing the discarded fireworks in a pile on your curb as opposed to in a trash container
